Looking for PC board setup program

Does anyone know of a good, free, chess board program that allows easy setups and piece movement for studying variations, etc, with no engine to get into the way?  State saving and move lists would also be nice...Thanx

I'll get the ball rolling...

I'd say either Scid vs. PC or Arena. (With Arena, you first have to click on the Edit button, otherwise the engine will move for the other side.)

I'm certain you won't find something WITHOUT an engine option. However, of course, you can just disable the engine.

I use Scid Vs. PC. It is a very nice little piece of software. And if you want a good dB for move lists, I can send you one.

One where you can show the position in a book via e.g. webcam and have it set up the board would be good imo.

I believe there are mobile apps that do this.

I would be very interested to hear which ones do.

Well I just sent for the Deep Rybka 4 because I wanted the best playing program I could afford...80+ US on Amazon!  And it's supposed to come with a seperate interface as well so that should do the trick for me.

I was a fair player in high school and then on OTB college games while at USC in 72 thru 74, but when I came back to my hometown, a cultural wasteland, I couldn't get any OTB play and they didn't have a club within 50 miles, so I started playing online.  Unfortunately I became very disgusted with the rampant cheating going on even in sanctioned tourneys and so quite playing all together for the last 40 years.  I obviously lost it all to my hippie lifestyle and am now trying to get back into the game.  But dam!  I seem to be finding the same problem here and now on Chess.com!  Twice in a row now I had opponents dissconecting and coming back with moves well beyond their current play!  And it was more than obvious that they didn't grok the moves they made cause they had to dissconect again and again!  I got messages saying they would be considered  for judgement on rule breaking, but if I want to play a computer that's what I'll do!
