Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know where I can find these wooden chess piece storage boxes in the United States?

https://www.schachversand.de/material/kaesten-koffer-etc/schachkasten-gross-nr-8-neutral.html

Thank you very much!

If there was ever a store that sold invisible chess storage boxes, I missed it.

Hi @polarchess and @chessroboto,

That is odd. The link works for me. I use the Chrome browser. Can you try again? If not, here are screenshots of the storage box. Thanks!

Hi, There's a one from HOS. Hope it will help.

I haven't checked Ebay's selection for years, but you used to be able to find wooden chess boxes real cheap.  A lot of them were from recently retired home craftsmen hiding out in their shops from yet another shopping trip with the wife...If I can find anything, I'll post a link.

Couldn't find any "the wife says I have to sell some stuff or she won't let me buy any more wood" listings, but a variety of boxes at decent prices, like this walnut for $50 (plus shipping)

Personally, I like the Blake and Lake box from Amazon. The lid closes so smoothly and the pieces can be placed standing up instead of in a pile. They have a black or oak version. The oak version might be more like the box you are looking for. The box is a little bigger at around 10.5 x 8 x 5. Here is my 3.75" HoS Players series in the box.

Hi @baddogno,

What a good idea! I like that one you posted. I also found this one with exact same dimensions as sold in Germany on Ebay, but it is in Solvenia!

Hi @mch818,

Thank you very much!

The German site is up now. Must have been down when we tried. Couldn’t handle the surge in visits because of the recommendation.

@Daniel: nice find, those wooden cigar boxes are amazing deals!

chessroboto

Love it when my hands could smell like a Cuban cigar after playing chess.

DrChesspain

I received each of the following boxes for free from two local smoke shops.  I attached adhesive backed felt inside both boxes, although the Zagreb pics were taken pre-felt.

@daniel2340, thank you! I picked up the last one! I loved reusable things like this.

@drchesspain, those look amazing. Did you buy the felt at a craft store like Michael's or Hobby Lobby?

DrChesspain

Yes, I bought a package of 5 sheets.  As one can see, my application is a bit sloppy, but the felt isn't visible with the lids closed.  Below is the Zagreb box after felting.

@DrChesspain, looks great! Good job! What glue did you use?

Thank you!

I didn't need to use any glue.  The felt sheets have an adhesive backing.

If you live near a "Home Goods" store, they often have some really nice wooden boxes for under $30.00

It is a hit and miss, sometimes, but once in a while you can get lucky. Btw,I have the Blake and Lake box and it is really nice....Lots of decent choices for those who like to surf for this kind of stuff.
