Looking to buy 19th Century Jaques Club set

Hi

So I have been hooked with the chess collecting big. I am looking to buy an antique Jaques club set but have been drawing blanks.

Does anyone know of one for sale or links to any antique sites. I have tried Lukehoney, Chess Antiques and one other in the US

Regards

Steve

What size are you after, and weighted or unweighted?

Tim Millard is selling a large collection of antique chess sets and will start adding new stock in mid April, which will most likely include various Jaques Staunton sets.

This is true - he's bought 2 Jaques sets off me in the past month (via ebay) so he must have at least 2 sets!

Then shipping & Import tax , Has not Oz got a fuss on importing old wood etc

I am after a weighted set in the hinge top box. Around the 1880s period.

No importing wood is not an issue if it is treated. Chess sets are often lacquered or treated in some way. I have never had an issue importing anything - apart from ridiculous customs fees and zealous customs officers. Generally everything gets through if you pay the fees.

the only issue would be untreated wood with obvious infestations. Even then you can pay for treatment.

I now see that you said “club” set in the topic title. So that’s 4.5 inch kings right? I recently sold my Jaques club set on eBay by auction. I do have a couple of club sized sets but they are probably made by Ayres, they’re not Jaques. I’m going to restore them before I try to sell them though.

Looks like a nice Ayres set. I didn’t go all the way to the end of the posts.

Early FH Ayres set's are really nice, & still a club if it falls into the 4 inch + prices have risen

over the years so not cheap .

Feel your pain with the  ridiculous customs fees and zealous customs officers.  Buying from the UK now has become a real pain even on this side of the water .

Hi thanks for the link. I have actually enquired about that set. It is beautiful. My only issues with it is that it is not an original box.
