Is that a fact? In this thread alone I can see rooks with none, four, five and six "notches".
I may be mistaken but I seem to remember having read (don´t ask where or when...) in an article about the ´50 Dubrovnik chessmen that to remove all religious references the king lost his cross shaped finial, the bishops their mitras and the rooks got five instead of the usual four "notches" (since the four notches colud be interpreted as a cross).
But I´m no expert, just an enthusiast, so if someone (hayesmills?) knows more and/or better I´m eager to learn.
