I search and experiment a couple of months with chess software and GUIs. I tried scid vs pc, arena, scid, chessx, chessmaster 11. I ended up with lucas chess because:
1) It's pretty straightforward, with simple interface.
2) It contains every tool an amateur player needs: full game analysis with adjustable time per move or depth, single move analysis and best alternative, position analysis, best move recommendation and best line of play
3) It includes pre-installed the stockfish 6 chess engine
4) Some tutorials and exercises not so great but either way this is a matter of minor importance
5) Play against engine (one of the dozens that come pre-installed)
6) It has a portable version
7) Easy opening and analysing pgn files
OK i agree that is not ideal for handling databases but i repeat it's the best for us amateurs that the first most important thing is analysing our own games, second play through master games (that easily can be found by thousands in pgn format) analyse them and try to figure out what is going on
On that tasks lucas chess is, by my opinion, everything someone needs
