Im trying to dicide on which computer i should get the mephisto master or the novag obsidian but, it seems that the more i research each one the less i know which one i want.. I go to different sites and they all claim different things, I have seen some sites claim the obsidian is stronger (having a higher rating) and i have also seen other sites claim the mephisto is the stronger one.. the novag csic chip is not reall explained to well, im wondering if it can improve the obsidians rating if it loses or whats up with that.. The mephisto master im just woundering if it's really the strongest one..   ALL I WANT IS THE STRONGEST COMPUTER THATS WORTH THE MONEY

Looks like you are settled on a dedicated tabletop unit?

Well i would like to get the strongest table top computer not being the cretine that one just cost to much money, so i'll settle for secound best.. I'm a computer tabletop chess player i prefer playing with table tops than online

I had a Mephisto Master computer for a brief while. It is quite difficult, but supposedly it is easier to handle if you set it to a level that limits its thinking depth. If you set its depth to the lowest possible setting, that might allow you to score better. Then you can increase its depth gradually as you win. Otherwise, you may have much difficulty even on the lowest levels.

Be advised: I wound up sending mine back soon after I bought it, because of a bug. When set to tournament time controls, such as 40 moves in 2 hours, the machine adds the 2 hours after only 20 moves (i.e., 40 ply), not 40 moves. When I e-mailed the company about it, they admitted that it was an unfixable bug. For this reason, I would recommend trying the Novag Obsidian.

I read somewhere that the Novag had a bug too on time controls or something like that...

I have not heard about that, but you should definitely get to the bottom of it before committing to purchasing the computer.

So setting up a regular board and loading your phone with a chess program is not under consideration?

I was also woundering about the Mephisto Master's self-rating system and how it worked.

Well the thing is that i dont have any one to play with and thats why i would like to get  a tabletop chess computer, I have regular boards i have 3 but they do me no good if i have no one to play with, and the phone apps i'm not really a fan on how the pices look (2d) ehh not for me it's not the same for me as when i play on a real board

I think goldendog's idea is for you to use an engine on a phone or other computer to play against, but for you to play its move out on a real board. Decide your response then enter it on the engine. Some will even speak the moves, eg Fritz.
