LOL. It's always a special day when I get a package from Ljubljana, Slovenia.

One of these packages in Serbia contains Informant 114 book and CD and should arrive within the next few hours. I look up every time I hear a truck outside.

Thanks, Chuck. I've been looking for a GC set for a long time. Very happy I managed to get set no. 604... :)

Still using cheap plastic for study, but I have the best and newest book: Chess Informant 124.

Frank, that's a very nice vintage (or is it antique?) set. What can you tell me about this maker, Golden Castle? I'm not familiar with it.

Golden Castle was a Japanese manufacturer. They produced high quality Staunton sets modeled after early 20th century Jaques sets during the occupation, ie from 1945 - 1952. Very nice-looking sets, and great artisanship. I assume they were produced specifically for sale to occupying GIs... Even their boxes were well-made Jaques copies:

What a great story!

My father and uncle were paratroopers who were saved from invading Japan by the atomic bombs so they were part of the occupation force. They were both moved by the experience.

I still have my father's books on Japanese architecture and Japanese gardens. For a birthday gift he gave me a Japanese abacus and a book on its use and history. Though I only got as far as learning addition, subtraction and some multiplcation, you can do cube roots on an abacus.

In 1946 they had a contest between an American using an electronic calculator a and Japanese using an abacus. The abacus won.

As horrible as the Pacific War was, a remarkable relationship between the US and Japan emerged.

3.5 Jaques. nice to play with

Mr-Endron

Nothing too exciting at the moment, but my god do the HOS Dubrovnik's play well. It's the only set I have that regularly gets comments on its playability.

Nice set up. Is that a Stalin poster hanging on the wall? Don't see many of those around here.

It improves my winning ratio by 300%-500%, per our 5 year plan.

Congratulations, Frank. I wondered whether one of us won it. I didn't get my bid in on time, or you might have had to pay a little more for it. C'est la vie!

Thanks. I figured I might end up bidding against someone here and was surprised it didn't go higher...
