If you are talking about the 1970 Dubrovnik. That is not saying anything. Since that is a repro of a repro. DesperateKingWalk wrote:

How can a 1970,s 1980's Dubrovnik be a repro , when theses chess set was still being made right up to the war & then came the break up of Yugoslavia ?

Now if you was to say , too find a original Dubrovnik chess set from the 50s 60s 70s 80s

Is a rare & hard find then Yes I would agreed , evil

This is correct.

The set designed and made for the 1950 Olympiad, has been called the Original Dubrovnik. The later iterations were not copies or reproductions of this Original set. They were designed and made individually on their own.

The set we see in the pictures with Bobby Fischer look more like the current set known as the Minceta, with the thick rooks.

I really enjoy this video - Dubrovnik Video … I am not sure who the narrator is but his passion and love of chess (in this and other videos) is why I am attracted to the video and the set within. I do not (yet) have a set of the “Dubrovnik”style of any era - and of course, when I do - it will be a reproduction - but hopefully somewhat close to the 1950 version. I am intrigued by the almost mythical status Dubrovnik sets have achieved - it seems on the back of comments by Bobby Fischer and others regarding their balance and functionality - of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and subjective by its nature. Whether high-end sets or cheap sets - it’s great we get to see them and then whichever set people have - I hope they are played and enjoyed as much as the narrator appreciates the history of the set in the video. Great stuff.

Ah yes, that is the great Izmet Fekali, who has the BestChessmenever web site and pieces which he designed.

Izmet is possibly the best authority on Dubrovnik pieces.

I miss seeing new videos from Izmet. I hope he is doing well.

I imagine people who buy for status will only buy high end stuff. I don’t see this with a lot of members here who own a Noj set. Many also own inexpensive sets as well. I have my Noj 1950 set. It is my #6 favorite. I also bought the below Chavet set for 107 GBP if I remember correctly. It is my #8 favorite. It is certainly not high end nor would anyone give me any status points for it. Yet I love it!

@Eyechess owns many Noj sets. At the same time, he loves his HoS Liberty set which is nice but also not high end. How about @CGrau... he had at least few Noj sets. He also had many vintage Lardy sets which again are nice but not high end. @Pawnerai owns a Minceta in red and an Oleg Raikis set. At the same time, he loves and owns German knight sets which are not high end. @Ronbo710 had one or two Noj sets. He also loves Chavet sets which were not all high end. What about @TheOneCalledMichael... he has both a Noj set and a Porat Jacobson set. At the same time, he has a large collection of vintage French sets which are super nice to me but not high end. @Magictwanger has a Noj Tal set if I remember correctly. Yet he also owns a Lardy set from the 70s/80s which he paid $15 for it. I see most who pay money for a Noj set do it because they are a chess enthusiast. Enthusiast won’t buy something just because it is high end. They will only buy something if it appeals to them in some way. If you have ever seen a review from @CGrau you will see status has nothing to do with why he bought that set. The common thing @Eyechess talks about is how a set handles. Again status has nothing to do with it. I think the same is true with most Noj owners out there.

D.K.W. that is so laughable a comment I'm almost speechless...You and I know you like to push buttons and enjoy being a contrarian often. It's what you are prepared to do here and you know it.

Someone disagrees with you,or calls you out for not trying to have the decency to support the folks who post "whatever" sets they own and you have to start with the name calling and post stupid memes, like you've done to me in past threads......My six year old grand daughter shows more maturity than you.

If you've actually ever seen or held an Noj set(I only have one and did not pay today's prices, but it is superior to all my other 21 sets ) it would be obvious that there are almost no sets like them in the way they are made and finished....Yes, custom sets will be in that realm, but they are even more money in many cases.

Here's some advice....Just let others take pleasure in what they have spent their hard earned money for....If you don't like it,that's fine. Have a little class and dignity and keep the criticism to yourself.

Just to add Minceta / is a NOJ made up name , I have seen many photos of the different style 's of what is known as a Dubrovnik chess set be it from the 50's 60's 70's 80's , Also many of theses set are very rare / hard to find & go for way more than a new NOJ in today's Market even in The Balkans .

and those copies do not stand own their own.  DesperateKingWalk , Well try buying one if it's a cheap KO & easy to find wink

Guys. Just don't feed the trolls. This is exactly what they want. They're unhappy people looking to make themselves the focus of attention and to ruin everyone else's time. Now another great thread is ruined.

It's never guaranteed to work but just ignore them and eventually these types will go away.

You do it because you guys are control freaks.

Your advice is to say only good things about all chess products. On a forum about chess products. And you are not allowed to give other facts and opinions.

Here is my advice.....

If you do not want comments on chess products. On a chess forum about chess products. THEN DO NOT POST THEM.

This kind of attitude, and the failure to understand the difference between what DKW calls “facts” and opinions, of which he has many, is the reason why many of us no longer post to the forum on any kind of regular basis. Anyone who collects for the love of chess sets in their many forms has little in common with a tournament player who denigrates anything that either costs more than he’s willing to pay, or is of a form that he rewards as hard to use. It makes the forum an unwelcoming place.

I did not know my opinions had that much power to control peoples actions.

And this forum is about all products and reasons for buying. And not just collectors.... Thank you very much.

This is not the collector's forum.

You control freaks keep proving my point.

And I will continue to give my opinions on chess products. And if you personally do not like them. WHO CARES.

Some like my opinions, and some do not. That is life.

And we will continue to call you out on your trolling.

@DesperateKingWalk,

You seem to be pretty good at insulting others for having their own opinions, and you are obviously a past master at gaslighting… that is, imputing your own motivations and actions to other people. Your user name is obviously accurate — DESPERATE for attention.

Have a nice day, sir.

Avatar of madmacsback

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Who’s the one whining? Looks like you can’t lose gracefully. I can’t be gaslit. I repeat, Good Day, Sir!!!

You are so right! But it can be difficult to not to say something to trolls and there have been many that trolled owners of Noj sets over the years. Trolls don’t play by the same rules. Like I said above, collectors are enthusiast so we like chess sets that range in design, materials, and prices. We don’t love a chess set because it is expensive. We love it because it matches a design we love, is made from nice materials, is made well, etc. Trolls don’t see things in this way. In general they have this chip on their shoulder and they have something to prove. They need to put others down to make them feel better about themselves so they are willing to say and do whatever they need to do in order or accomplish their goal. It would be like someone going into a high end vehicle forum for a Mercedes, Ferrari, Porsche and calling those cars overpriced. Who does that? Well someone with something to prove is who.

Edit: I might also mention that if I had a Ferrari and someone trolled me, I would just smile after all I have a beautiful car I love! The troll has his chip. Who wins there? You be the judge.

Back to the topic at hand... Here are two of the photos from the OP just to refresh everyone’s memory. Isn’t this set beautiful? I always wanted a Minceta. I am sure glad I bought my Noj 1950 set before the QG craze made it impossible to get one without waiting 2 years. I somewhat regret not buying one of the Minceta sets that came up for auction earlier this year.

Avatar of lighthouse

Going back to the OP , ddragos , Its a nice set I hope it was worth the wait 2 year that's along time + SakisTsiogkasWood chess board is a nice match , Thanks for sharing + great photos . tongue

Avatar of MCH818

I don’t know about the rest of the Noj owners but I smile every time I use my set. I am sure the OP will enjoy his Minceta very much.

Beautiful set. I would love an unweighted Minceta in any finish. Lately, the red stain has my eye. I don’t own any Noj sets but I love looking at them and have considered getting on the waiting list but I’m always too lazy to try.

There's no obligation that comes with being on the waiting list, so you can always just email and say "please put me on the waiting list", then when your name comes up in 2-3 years you can see if you have the spare moolah for a set or two.
