Hello,

I just got my first RF chessboard. On the rear side one can see some traces. Having no experience with wooden chessboard i was wondering if its common for wooden boards, or not. Thank you for your help.

Looks like the mark of the beast. I would burn it.

There should be no scratches on a new chess board. However, the damage is on the bottom. No one will notice. You could just keep it as-is. It would definitely bug me if I received that. However, I am not sure it would bug me enough to return it.

If it is varnished you can remove the scratches with fine grain sandpaper and water, moving in circles and aplying low pressure. If not varnished use the sandpaper the same way without water.

I'm with @MCH818, it would not bug me enough to return it.

Ask for a partial refund.
