Seems to be some confusion. I’m not teaching chess to college kids. I teach analytics at the university. Other than a few basics, there’s not much I can teach about chess right now ha ha ha

Teaching your son and daughter (as mentioned in your first post) counts as "teaching". In which case, it's helpful to have a board with notations when you get to that point in your chess journey.  thumbup.png

Oh and I’m not sure if this helps, but I don’t really prefer between wood or plastic pieces but I do think I’d like a board that folds in half. When not in use, I’ll need to store it somewhere.

Both of the boards I linked to cost 80$ and both store prices inside a folding board

Sorry! Totally overlooked your post. Those are exactly what I’m looking for!

Thanks!

Man, the more I look, the more I’m realizing how what you guys/gals meant by $80 being limiting ... and finding something in stock! Might not be the best time to take up chess ha ha!

I like the ones @battleduck linked. But I was just looking around this morning I came across this folding board ... at $80 ha ha!

So say I went with something like this, now I’d need pieces. Any recommendations? This is kinda fun! ;)

Once again:

Legend Products has some nice and affordable packages available here.  Click on Specials to see what's available - you may like the roll-up board and storage tube combo for travel.  Of course, what's actually in stock at this point is an open question.

@Mickeyboca you can’t put the pieces inside that one. (If that’s still one of your requirements)

Putting pieces inside is not necessarily a requirement now that I've looked some more. Folding board is all I'm looking for, whether that means the pieces are inside or in a bag or what. Heck, Amazaon has some options but those feel like they could be cheap ... I don't know.

So what are the new requirements ,since piece storage and 80$ total are not on the table anymore?

Hi there I've got this set which cost around £60 when I bought it. Everything stores inside a case. It's a folding board, 3 inch set so might be a bit small but I really like it. Pieces are lightly weighted.

I also have this plastic set which I love. Pieces are nicely weighted and includes 2 queens so total weight is about 900g. This cost £12. The board is silicon and cost £10. I would really recommend getting one with notation if you are learning chess. I have bags to store pieces in and the silicon board is super easy to store just fold it up and put it anywhere.

The pieces are 3.75 and board 20 inches from what I can remember. Here's my set.

So ... Seems like most everything is sold out ha ha

This set was out of my range when I first started but lack of supply has possibly extended that range happy.png This seems like a nice set but I wish it had coordinates ... Or maybe that's just me being picky.

This board the one I think you refer to is also sold by a great dealer Chess house and it’s in stock. Very helpful staff.

Thanks! That's a huge help! From the looks of things, I'm open to just a board and then set of nice plastic pieces so that link was a very good read. I appreciate it happy.png

I'd go for that Legend Products Plastic Alegria Chess set in mentioned by the first poster but in natural. Why? The less expensive wood sets tend to develop splits over time. Ten years ago I picked up a HOS Championship Set in Natural and Ebonized Boxwood (89.00). You can see some splitting on the knights. I'm planning on replacing it with the set referenced above as that's about as nice of a plastic set as they make. I'd pair it with a roll-up silicon board (green and white for easy visibility) from any reputable chess vendor.

As Legend is a smaller vender they still have their pieces in stock.T he Legend products chess men come with two drawstring bags.  Snag a mailing tube and you've got storage for the silicone mat. If the interest in chess sticks, you pick up a bag and a clock in the years to come.

TLDR; a nice plastic set is a better value than a cheap wood set.

Definitely going plastic, especially after reading that. I looked at the Alegria set back when the option was posted. But the shipping was so much. The set is nice too but I don't really care for the bag. I wish I could get around that.

Is the best advice advice in my opinion.

We use this set in Russia in all tournaments and it's great.

I have this set myself and for the price it's the best hands down.

Meets all FIDE requirements, ideal for kids, adults and professionals.

Stop wasting your time just trust me on this buy it ! Im from Russia and I know a thing or too about chess.

If you don't mind the basic-looking, rather light wooden pieces, that set does look like a good option. Certainly the largest board/piece wood combination you can get for the price.

I'd still go with a better-qulity plastic set over basic wooden pieces. @mickeyboca - aren't you in the US? How much can shipping from Oregon be?

Pieces are $39.95 and shipping is $15.95 ... which doesn't make for a bad overall price now that I've done some looking around. Now the catch is that I've found a board with 1.75" squares off Etsy from a seller ColoradoWoodWorker. But after talking to the owner at Legend Products, his pieces won't fit on 1.75" squares.

If you are ok with plastic chess set, then the HOS Marshall Analysis Plastic set is 35 mm king base which is perfect for a 1.75 inch chess squares. It’s also available on Chesshouse site in case you want to buy half sets.

Ideally for a 1.75” a 35 to 38 mm king base is most suitable.
