Ultimate Chess Pieces*

For plastic chess pieces for club and tournament play, the following are several sets (pieces) which I think are above average in quality and appearance....

The "Fischer" series set* - (pieces pictured above)...

The "Marshall" series set* (pictured above)...

The "Guardian" plastic set* -  (pictured above)....seem to be popular...

The "Hastings" plastic set* (pictured above)...

The "Ultimate Chess Set"* (pieces - pictured above), recently re-introduced by Shelby Lorhman's American Chess Equipment, is popular.  (Note the "white" pieces are decidedly yellow in color)...

Below are a few more choices of plastic pieces from The Chess Store, House of Staunton, Chess House and American Chess Equipment...

From The Chess Store I also like the "ProTourney" and "Zukert" series sets...

And from House of Staunton, the "Collector" and the "Zurich" series sets are also nice...

From Raphael Neff's Chess House...I also like the "Professional" series pieces...

From Shelby Lorhman's American Chess Equipment, their "Bobby Fischer" series (also known as the "Cavalier" pieces) has received good reviews on chess.com...

Note that the better pieces are weighted - usually triple-weighted - for enhanced feel and stability.

For rollup boards, I recommend either the regulation vinyl rollup boards (in particular the premium models, with cloth backing), or a recent product -  the new, improved, thinner - 1/16 inch - mousepad board, which can be rolled up or folded (without creasing or wrinkling) for storage and transport.

The following is an example of a good premium vinyl rollup board offered by Chess House...

The improved mousepad chess boards have recently been offered by Raphael Neff's Chess House and also by Shelby Lorhman's American Chess Equipment...

All of the chess stores cited above are reputable chess equipment retailers which I have purchased many sets from, and have been very pleased with their products and service.

Note: I store my rollup boards in a cardboard mailing tube - that way they keep well and won't get wrinkled, and will unroll nice and lay flat for playing (to ensure that it will lay flat, be sure to roll up the board with playing squares OUTWARD)........

Finally, for those interested in quality solid wood chess boards, the following discussions might be of interest.....featuring boards by Drueke, JLP, and Colorado WoodWorker...
