One thing I have found is that there are a million options and so many websites ... Which as someone who likes to analyze everything, makes it all so confusing. You have no idea how much I appreciate your help and input.

I would recommend this as a 1st starter set if you don't want the basic club set.

DGT Starter Box. The Grey box is what is pictured and the one I have. It's not weighted very much but it looks better than the Basic Club sets.

Plastic Ultimates from American Chess Equipment.

Vinyl or mousepad style board with 2.25 inch squares from anywhere.

Problem solved.

$50+ is hardly a good 1st option. Hate to see someone waste their money on a set they regret later on. $20 or below is about what I would recommend spending for a 1st set. If you like chess and want to get more. Then yes the Ultimate Chess Pieces are a good option for a 2nd upgraded set.

Aye aye aye. All the experts around here. $50 isn’t that crazy for a first set. I was just trying to suggest quality plastic pieces. This reminds me of people who say you shouldn’t play a particular opening until you reach a certain rating.

The Ultimate Chess set is only $26 not $50. Add vinyl board $6 instead of a $14 mousepad if you want to really save I guess. That's pretty reasonable for really nice travel set IMHO.

Those are great! Only problem is my board has 1.75” squares.

I’d second Rishi9’s recommendation: HOS Marshall Analysis plastic set works well on an HOS 1.75”-board. The pieces have good detail and weighting and are available in several color options.

Hey that board you are getting looks very nice Mickeyboca.

@mickeyboca: it’s African Palisander & Maple. There is some misalignment of the squares but it’s only visible when looking across the files; the squares are perfectly aligned when looking along the files from the normal perspective. 🙂

That's for the butter set. Not the new off white set.
