No doubt it's a stunning looking box, however "Pleasant Time Industries" has some exceptionally high quality ones too,at considerably lower prices...Not cheap though. I have quite a few of them, but have moved towards the Blake & Lake variants do to the threat of divorce if I spend anymore money on my "numerous" hobbies.-happy.png

Not taking anything away from the JLP....It's superb!

I just bought a cheap storage box from Amazon today. And it will be delivered in 2 days. The box looks good, and has a lock. And cost me only $75. And claims it will hold a chess set over 4.5 inch tall. If the storage box is good. I will buy a few more, and I will give a review of the storage box regardless good or bad.

As I am not keen on spending hundreds of dollars for a storage box. I would rather use that money for just one more chess set. Then I am done buying chess sets.

I measured the inside of that box, it won’t fit any set above 3.5” standing up. If, however, you are ok with them being on top of each other, then it will suffice.

It's still a very good price and a really nice box.....Pre Covid,I had been going to home decorating stores(only when the wife had to get something) and have picked up some nice and appropriate boxes for maybe $20.00 at most.

Best values in quality boxes still has to go to "Pleasant Time Industries",imo. I have four of them.

Ha! My Noj set came with a super nice silver embossed cardboard box, which is rather classy....Dampened the cost of the set.

I was going by what Amazon gave as the inside dimensions. If they are correct It should hold a 4.5 inch king standing up. But for $75 I can live with that if you are correct.

  • Inside Dimensions: 6 5/8 x 4 1/2 x 4 7/8 inches tall (each side)
  • Fits up to a 4 3/4 inch King

Oh, it will hold the king standing up, the issue is all the rest of the pieces. You will have to jumble some on top of each other as the bases won’t fit.

That's no problem at all.I've had to fit a few pawns in boxes that way as well...No biggie.

@VBerris I am curious. What are you going to put in your 2nd JLP box?

Here’s what will be in each (I’ve broken down and ordered 4):

1. Noj BCE Blitz 3.75”

2. Oldset Latvian/Mordovian 3.94”

3. Biro Sandor Hungarian/Romanian 3.75”

4. Oldset French Regency 4.5” (customized box)

I will eventually add one more, but that’s the list!

Nice list! For #4, is the box going to be from JLP?

Yes it is! It’s the same box, a woodworker in Kansas made me an “extension” in walnut and maple. Will take photos once that arrives happy.png

Cool! Can’t wait to see photos.

It hasn’t arrived yet, but here are the photos taken at the shop:

Same as factory, with only the inclusion of longer screws. Really, for the amount of wear that these hinges will incur, they are fine.

I’ll upgrade my entire collection to Brusso solid brass hinges in the future, if I ever see a point that they may be needed.
