Nice board, if I may ask was this obtained from mtmwood.com? It looks like his work which is excellent.

MaxReaver

Yes. Andrei at MTMWood - He is excellent to work with! I have 2 boards on the way from him...

I have 3 boards from Andrei myself I bought 2 in 2015 and one this year. As pictured. All of top quality work and I may ask him to make just one more for me but I have to decide on which woods and style I want for the last one.nullnullnullnullnullnullnull

Thanks for the kind words. The set on the last photo  a is a 1950's Reproduced Soviet-Russian "Antiqued" chess set positioned on a mtm wood company's chaotic patterned board from the Chess Bazaar website. Still available last I checked. As for the set in the photo before that it was  The Old Vintage English Series in Staunton pattern is made up of black dyed boxwood and boxwood from the Chess Bazaar website as well and it has a nice heft and feel to the pieces. Also still available on their website.

Thank you magictwanger for your compliments soon I will get to display my new chess set acquisitions on some of these boards and a few from Brad Borkowski of Colorado Woodworker shop on Etsy. Some wood and some plastic sets arriving pre and post Christmas. Updates soon, but I must  digress this is MaxReaver's post thread and I don't want to interfere too much here, my sincerest apologies. Let focus on his brand new beautiful board.

Nice boards indeed!

I don't want to be too disrespectful, but I bought the below pictured "high end" board from a well-known USA supplier of luxury chess pieces and boards - the board cost nearly $1300!

I was very upset with the build quality - the playing surface only had about a 1/4" of hardwoods on top! Andrei's boards, for half the price or less, have nice thick slabs of hardwood on them (1/2" or more) and are of superior manufacture in my opinion. I ended up selling the "high end" board...null

Wow! Now that's a classy looking board, come to think of it I had envisioned something very similar to project to Andrei to make for me in 2018 with the same type of maple middle level design and a raised playing platform. Too bad you sold it perhaps I could have negotiated a deal with you to obtain it.

Great looking board for sure...build quality is what concerned me. I expected more hardwoods at this price point. The board also sagged a bit in the middle (something I think heavier use of hardwoods & a better built frame may have helped with).

How is the underside of this board built? Is it held by clips or is it glued together as mine is with a cutout for expansion and contraction purposes?

I don't recall seeing any metal clips. I am pretty sure the board had a cutout with some sort of paneling underneath (since the hardwood surface wasn't thick enough by itself).

I must admit I LOVE the look of these type of boards....Those with the raised playing surface and what seems to be a framed edging....Just gorgeous!! I bought one from CB a few months ago,not knowing about "this" mfgr(sorry).....It came out to be quite nice, but after inspecting it I put it away and have not used it since.I've been very busy with family and the selling of my small business....but...now it's all over & I can get on with my chess hobby.....One thing....I am very skeptical of "anything" from CB from my dealings with them,so I hope I have no issues moving forward. They did clear up issues, but took away my confidence in their products.....Too bad I was in such a rush to buy my sets and boards.Everything is currently fine and acceptable, but I'm always worried about problems popping up in the future.....Sorry to go off topic, but I wish I knew about these wonderful vendors last year.

How long is the whole process from planning until you receive the order from Andrei ?

He said he was out until Feb. It took him a couple of weeks to make and then shipping took 4 weeks as I didn't pay for express shipping and it was around the holidays.

FYI - I am contemplating selling the pictured board Andrei made for me - 2.5" squares of bog oak and maple - one damn fine board. Message me if it might be what you're looking for...

Thanks for the reply MaxReaver. That's a beautiful board. Unfortunately, I am trying to curb my hobby related expenses at the moment. It just happen I saw one of Andrei's chess building video and he puts a lot of effort into it. Given it also ships from Russia, it got me curious on how long the total order duration is.
