engines aren't always the greatest at analyzing openings.
Nimzowitch Vs Fritz 12

Certainly opening theory has advanced since "My System" was written. That certainly doesn't mean it is without value. Pretty much every thread I've read here on "best chess books" has included it. Is it the very best book for beginners ? Oh, probably not. Do a search of the forums (the box in the upper right hand corner) and I'm sure you will find lots of archived threads with lively discussions of the "best chess books" and "best beginner chess books". Silman's "The Amateur's Mind" seems to get good reviews. Chess.com has spoiled me; I'd rather watch videos, do ChessMentor courses, and get beat up by the tactics trainer than read, but you need a premium membership for all that.

Out of morbid curiosity, I threw your first position into the Game Explorer, chess.com's interactive database of master games and got the following for black's seventh move: e4 27 times, exd4 2times, and 2 other masters chose Bg4. The second opening was so obscure that it wasn't listed although there was 1 game that got as far as move 5 where white chose c x d4. Hope that helps.

Many thanks, Trigs and Baddogno, for your interest. Certainly chess.com is a great place to learn, much better than I could imagine, I wish I had known before. Is true that Karpov moves -for example- aren´t in the same way than we can see in a game by Steinitz (although when I try to analyze some games, masters from present and past keeps many secrets for me), but I've been looking for games and in a one from 1928 with Nimzowitch facing Tarrasch (Bad Kissingen, the ninth game) Nimzowitsch himself chose the pawn advance (firsts moves are slightly different but move 8 reach the same position by transposing) ... definitely the advance looks better, perhaps a good reason (in my begginer´s opinion) is this move avoid and early check by the queen in move 9. It seems strange that other readers of the famous “My system” haven´t raised similar doubts (at least I searched the forum and haven´t found any post expressing something like that). In any case, I´ll try to get the Silman book (I did the search and is true, is a very recommended treatise, thanks!) but I think it will be good to continue reading and verifying Nimzowitch with Fritz and databases ... at least, maybe can learn by comparing

Oh, I forgot to comment about the game 1.e3? Looks like a transposition for white of French defense ... very strange and contradictory to "My sistem" principles.

also, it's worth noting that many many books written before computers (and even some after) have been shown to have errors, inaccuracies, and even mistakes once they have been run through an engine. however, that does not mean that they are not still good sources of information.

Hi everybody
I play chess for some years, but always informal, guided only by intuition. However a few months ago I'm trying to take it more seriously to learn and improve my game (and I registered in Chess.com also). After searching and browsing several chess books, I chose "My system" by Nimzowitch. I started to study and, in the first chapter, (which begins by planning the opening) Nimzowitch gives some tips that do not correspond with movements Fritz 12 makes in that position. For example (first chapter, part five) after: 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4 d5? 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.Nc3 Bb4 6. Bd2 Bxc3 7.Bxc3 Nimzowitch recommends 7...exd4, stating that never "artificial moves like and Bg4 or frivolous like e4" ... but in that position Fritz moves 7…e4
Another example, in Part 6 of chapter 1 also. After: 1.e4 e5 2.d4 exd4 3.c3 Nf6! 4.e5, Nimzowitch states black must play the knight to e5, and after that, if white moves 5.Bd3, the threatenig must to be answered with 5 ... d5 but never moving the knight to c5. But, checking this, is just what Fritz moves (5 ... Nc5)
I'm somewhat confused and not know what to do. Continue with Nimzowitch or is better to find another book to learn chess?
(P.D. Probably my english isn't so good, sorry!)
