2021 Official FIDE World Chess Set.

@zagryan Yeh, I totally understand You. Sometimes its better to be uneducated. When I ordered mine, I had been waiting for the official set to be restocked for months. Then somehow I navigeted to the Niggemann site and saw acceptable prices for the weighted set in package with the dgt board. I was still afraid they did not have them in store, because dgt official shop was empty since the chess hysteria started. To my surprise, they just received them, so I did not hesitate, I wanted to try out the dgt experience for many years already. I knew nothing about slim knights (I am sure both versions are very nice in person), possible quality problems anything.

And everything worked out fine. Sometimes its worth to take the risk.

@dobtom That's an astute observation. I couldn't agree more.

BTW, it was exciting to watch FIDE World Chess Championship 2021 between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi last week. Chess.com's live coverage was superb, with IM Danny Rensch as the main commentator, GM Fabiano Caruana, GM Robert Hess and GM Hou Yifan providing analysis.  Highlight of the match, for me, was game 11 when Ian made g3 move, eliciting an "Oh my gosh!" commentary from Danny.

I'm sure many of you here watched that scene so I won't bore you further but one of the interesting tidbits I noticed (as a CB&E enthusiast) throughout the match was a gray squared chess board that chess.com team used for showing the live board & analysis of various positions. It was pleasant to follow the moves on that board because it was easy on the eyes.  It also reminded me of my DGT Centaur.  Incidentally, my one and only Official World Chess set is a Studio Set.  I selected that set over the full sized version, hoping it would fit the 48mm squares of the DGT Centaur better... and it does. Yes, "sometimes it's worth to take the risk." Enjoy the photos.

LOOOOVE it, @zagryan! Do you have foil at the bottom making it work or some sort of similar modification?

zagryan

@lotsoblots Yes, the pieces all have silver aluminum foil tape attached at the bottom. They're readily available on Amazon.

Dear owners of the Official FIDE World Chess Set,

I noticed that the pieces (i.e. Pawns, Bishop, Knight, and Rook) are quite large relative to the 3.75" King. Did anyone try the set on a 2.25" square size board (rather than 55 mm)? (And took a picture of it?)

Aernout_nl

@zagryan That is a fantastic combination, enjoy! I recently acquired the Studio set myself, so I am just wondering: Does the aluminium foil negatively impact using the pieces on a regular board? Is it easy to remove the foil (or is the glue quite strong)? Quite a shame that the Pegasus is so much smaller.

I also purchased the FIDI knockoff set from ChessbyIndia in shesham for the dark. I payed $90 and it was shipped from India and arrived in less than a week. The set itself was a STEAL because it was flawless and I like the shesham wood much better than the black. I cant imagine that having an official set would make me feel any better. It sure wouldn't make me a better player because I suck but it sure looks good setting on my coffee table with with a nice wooden board.

Congrats! Any photos of your new set?

I know it's a knockoff set but for $89 all the way from India  there's no complaints here. And it arrived in less than a week!   *This was all pre covid. *   Only flaw is the miter cuts on the bishops are a little ragged. The board is a Rechapados Ferrer so it cost more than the set.  I rarely play over the board so it's mainly used for decor in the living room. I have found that buying a nice board and pieces do not make a better player because I'm a terrible chess player but I do enjoy it.

Aernout_nl

That's pretty nice, CJW00! The board is a 55 mm RPF I presume? The set looks a bit more friendly and open with the sheesham, I like it!

P.S. I own an official Studio set (3")--the mitre cuts not better than yours... wink.png

The (plastic) Academy Set's mitre cuts are pretty good!  tongue.png

The mitre cuts on ALL world championship set bishops are ragged, legit or not. I've said before that I think Daniel Weil was a bit too ambitious here with a design that cannot be reliably produced by carvers of the set. Of the 13 bishops I have from World Chess and DGT, every single bishop has a flaw in that area, some more than others, but not a single one perfect.

What's especially odd is that I think the bishop would have looked better with a straight cut, anyway!

CJW00

The squares are exactly 2 1/8 inches so whatever that is. 53mm?

Aernout_nl

Interesting! I didn't know Rachapados Ferrer did imperially sized boards! Where did you get it?

See e.g. here.

CJW00

I purchased it from The Chess Store and it's listed as 2.125" square. I don't see my exact board on the website right now but there are others
