Beautiful Mike, i love the black pieces they look more like African Blackwood with that grain. Congratulations.
Thanks Santi, the wood used is exotic Macassar Ebony according to Official Staunton
Hi Mike,
Really? That's weird because Macassar ebony has this big brown stripes like the black and white Ebony. However it does looks exactly like African Blackwood which is actually a rosewood but so dark that it resembles Ebony with a beautiful brown hue. Maybee what they mean is that it looks like Macassar Ebony scaled down in size, African Blackwood is also on the CITES list nowadays because of been a rosewood so that would also be a good reason to pass it for Macassar if they didn't had the right papers. Never the less minor detail and a gorgeous set.
This is how Macassar ebony is suposed to look:
Here under a Bishop in African Blackwood from a set i have to show you what i mean.
Thanks Santi, I'm now told its Indian Ebony wood
Hey Mike!
Mistery solved then! http://www.wood-database.com/ceylon-ebony/
Indian Ebony with some brown grain. The curious in this story is that the most valued Ebony is pitch black. So assuming all the dark pieces have this grain they must have selected this "grained" Ebony which is usually unwanted and cheaper. Whether that choice was done on purpose, by accident or because of lack of funds it has turned out pretty well with the link to the old Black wood sets where you could see grain of the blackwood. They could have stained it black but decided to keep the grain in there so we can only assume they keeped this link to the past on purpose and the antique effect on the boxwood backs this up doesn't it. Like this they have made one of the best repros around not only because of the carving but with the wood choices and treatment.
Hi Mike: How long was the delivery and what's the cost of delivery? How much did you pay for Customs?
Hi Liml, 3 day delivery to US. Delivery cost to the US is 25 GBP. Check with Official Staunton for delivery cost to Canada. Not sure if Canada has a customs tax.
