It is neither old nor silly, it is the FIDE rule: 4 pawns fit on a square.

Mind you I have yet to see a set where 4 pawns will completely fit in one square (even in sets/boards actually used in major tournaments and WC matches) and I think the pawns would look tiny on a board if they could fit 4 to a square. I think the operative word here is "should" as opposed to must. So while "silly" may be overstated a bit, "old" and "unobserved" are accurate words. grin.png

@Ulfbert Thanks for the photos! I like the board a lot. It looks very nice. The thickness of the board is fine too. I can see what you meant by the light colored line and the smaller border. Overall the board looks great but not if you were expecting a version similar to the DGT e-board. I guess it would be food for thought if I ever wanted to order one.

Agreed. The photos show a really nice walnut board but it is slightly different from the DGT e-boards. Good info if that would affect your choice.

For anyone interested, I found a thread from last year where @Megalumberjack purchased a non-electronic DGT board from https://www.libriumgames.co.uk/store/index.php?route=product/product&path=73&product_id=95. Here is the thread: https://www.chess.com/forum/view/chess-equipment/dgt-non-electronic-board-beginners-guide

In the thread he confirmed he received a slightly thinner non-electronic version the DGT e-board. There is still 2 in stock. I was really tempted to order one but didn't.
