Old books and Chess magazines

Hey,

When my grandfather died, he left me a lot of old Chessbooks and chess magazines from his long life of chessplaying.

It is mostly a collection of German, Danish and Norwegian litterature, and the earliest stuff is from about 1910.

All though im not about to sell my grandfathers collection, i would like to know if these things have any value and maybe where to go to find collectors who know about these things.

Anybody got a clue about these things?

Go to http://global.ebay.com/ , choose Denmark as your country, and search for some of the titles you now own. This should give a rough idea of what your books are worth. I searched "Capablanca", and the books are in the 100-200 DKr range.

Don't sell!!!!!!!! Once you send the books away, you'll regret as they are the last ting you have after your grandfather. Condolences

No no my friend... I would never sell, even though my first post may could seem like that.

It is just truly amazing to sit and look through old books and magazines some of which are almost 100 years old and experience chess history in a whole other light than through the more current works on what went on back then.

Sometimes a small piece of paper drops out from one of these books or magazines, and it will contain my grandfathers annotations or an analysis of a peticular game he thought was interesting, and when that happens its like he is there again next to me. A wonderful thing :-)

Enjoy reading the material . Most items will not be worth that much ($30-50)--there are several good book sources in the Norwegian area that could perhaps help you out. The magazines should provide interesting reading/ If I remember correctly the Norwegian magazine started around 1906 and the Swedish one 1901 (though it was published a little before that)--also there is a good set of Swedish biographies (Schlecter, Zukertort, Morphy, Anderssen from around 1920.
