Value depends on the size, this is a Lardy Glass-Eye set. I bought one with a different suitcase (the faux-croko provided by APF Rolland for their imports in the 1970s a couple of years ago, Staunton 5 size.

hi chessmaster-diamond ,Thank you for your message and your details. I will communicate the dimensions in photos. THANKS

I wonder if this is a German or French set, because I see on different sources that it is made in France or Germany?

Powderdigit

Wherever it was made - someone is going to end up with a beautiful vintage set. 👍

the pieces in this set seem large to me, but I don't know if there are larger pieces for this set.

Beautiful set. What are the glass eyes made of . Is it actual glass or what. Is it durable so that the eyes donot come out

1000TROUS

Hi, yes, the eyes are made of glass. I don't know how these eyes are fixed, I imagine there must be a small metal rod behind the eye and some glue, I know that knights often lose one or their glass eyes.

here is what I was able to receive in terms of information regarding this complete french chess set:

« This is a Vintage chess set in the Staunton pattern, XXème siècle. Dating from the 50s, which was produced by Lardy in France (or by someone else under the licence of Lardy) »

« The wood grain on the white pieces indicates that these are made of olive wood. The darker pieces are a bit more difficult to determine, but what little is visible of the wood grain looks to me like ebony wood or rosewood.”

Spécial feature this game is weighted with lead and all the felt pads, all knights have their glass eyes.

(a black tower is a little damaged on the top, visible on photo)

Dimensions:
the king: height 83.70mm, diameter 32mm
the queen: height 76.90mm
the knight: height 62.70mm, diameter 30mm
the pawn: height 42mm, diameter 24mm

The box is in good general condition, the clasps and hinges are original and functional, this one is in burgundy leather, the interior in burgundy velvet and beige satin (the satin has a little wear visible in the photo)
" I am not familiar with this particular type of box. I know that the German retailer A.P.F.v. Rolland in Berlin sold this set and used very similar red leatherette cases, but they differed from this one in details, so I think this is a genuine French set. “

"this chess set is moderately rare, but all the more rare with this box, these woods, and in this very good general condition. "

I don't want to sell to a professional, just a private chess player

So except for the different box it's exactly the set I bought three years ago (and sold last year). I bought it on classifieds for around €70, but I guess I was lucky.

Hi,can you show me a photo of the chess set you bought? thanks

chessmaster_diamond

I deleted them when I sold the set, so I won't feel depressed. I can only show you a photo of the box, because I got another set with the same case, so typical for the APF Rolland sets in the 1970s.

The king, queen look like they belong to the Lardy family. but I have never seen a knight of this sorts in a Lardy set. Am I missing something or this is an other variant.

chessmaster_diamond

Apparently it's a legitimate Lardy set: https://www.etsy.com/de/listing/965494145/vintage-franzosisch-lardy-schach-set-k?show_sold_out_detail=1&ref=nla_listing_details
