Oleg Raikis: The Evolution of the Angry Knights

Sort:

Had a chance to chat with Oleg Raikis recently. He is still hard at work sculpting beautiful custom chess pieces.

It's interesting to see Oleg artistically sculpt more pieces inspired by the Angry Knights. One has the addition of heavy armor. The other has a decorative breast collar. The essence, emotion and spirit of our original concept is still unmistakably present. Absolutely, brilliant! Congrats to the owner of these beautiful Knights.

Flashback!

My original thread here: "Angry Knights" Raikislai chess pieces

I love everything this guy makes.....A true artisan!

Pawnerai

If you can imagine it, Oleg will sculpt it!

Hi pawnerai, did you design this knight or was it olegs own creation. I think it's an incredible set.

The new Knights (posted above) are new creations commissioned by one of Oleg's many imaginative clients. If you're here on this forum, PLEASE post an image of the full set in action. Would love to see it.

The first Raikislai Knight (pic below) was an original, collaborative effort between Oleg and myself. We chatted about what I had in mind. The emotion, movement, and pose. Photo references. Sketches. It was an unforgettable experience to have the opportunity to work with him. Some random coincidental events led up to it, and the stars were all aligned.

Unfortunately I have never seen Oleg’s work in person but from the photos, reviews, broad body of work (aka experience) - Oleg’s craftsmanship is excellent. Top drawer. I favour creativity or perhaps better worded, diversity in my sets and thus, these new minted knights are wonderful in my eyes - in truth, with a base set as purchased by @pawnerai - one could simply commission/add new knights like those above and swap them out on a whim. Very cool.

Regarding commissioning a set from Oleg.....Knowing that Noj takes about three years to get one,how long does Oleg take once you decide to go for a set? Which seem to be the penultimate in a set of chess pieces......Real "art"!

Just curious.

Pawnerai

@ magictwanger  My commission took 3 months to arrive. If you catch him at the right time, it might take 2 months. If there are 3 commission sets ahead of you, it might be a year(?). I really can't speak for him though. I found him to be surprisingly accessible and easy to talk to, quite the gentleman. Contact @MGT88 for way more information regarding Oleg Raikis. He was the one who connected us originally. Good luck!

I even have an unboxing video somewhere on the internet. Fun times! LOL

That's pretty good! I'd have thought he'd be backed up as far as Noj.

Oh boy! I hope my desire to spend some chess set money doesn't start to kick in. I have room for one more set in my chess room and have been giving thought to what set I'd want if I decided to splurge.

I'll lie down until the feeling goes away...Don't post anymore pictures....Yuk!

It’s hard to say anything other than “Wow!” Thank you for sharing.

This set was commissioned by a new client, whom I brought to Oleg; the knight designs displayed here are not "new", or "improved", versions of the original angry knight, rather, they are different designs altogether; the client was simply inspired by the angry knight design and used it as a launching point for his own commission.

@Powderdigit Yes, that's correct; Oleg does custom knight design commissions as a regular part of his business; he builds them into the base set of the client's choice.

@magictwanger I've become good friends with Oleg and we work closely together; if you're interested in ordering from him, let me know and I can help you out.

It’s okay Magic. Room for One more?  Once you start planning the new room/wing off the present  chess den you’ll feel better.😉

Ha! I have a condo townhouse....Lucky the wife gave me the small second bedroom as a hobby room.....Not much more space.....I did have to bribe her with some bling though.

My chess/hobby room can be found in the thread....."A Room,A View"....In the Equip section.

Sorry for the poor angled photos.Below the table is one more spot for a set.....Hmm?

However they now share the  space with my Astro Binoculars,of which two of the big boys are on tripods...out of view.......God! I love my toys!tongue

Hey Magic, nice thread and pictures of “The Room…” i missed them last December I guess. yep, I think there is room for some angry knights in there.😉 please post more pictures when they arrive.

HA...HA..HA!

Need permission from the wife first, before I start spending. I can't afford to piss her off....I Like her cooking way too much and I'm only good for a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, with my skills.

Come to think of it,my cooking skills equate closely with that of my chess skills.

One must admit, the Oleg creations are second to none! Thank you @Pawnerai for posting the pictures. This is as close as many of us will ever get to them.

KineticPawn

They look amazing but I think I prefer the more original Oleg Raikislai. It's simpler which leaves the focus on the extremely expressive faces of the knights.
