Oleg Raikis: The Evolution of the Angry Knights

I am the client that commissioned this set from Oleg, with the help of @MGT88. I definitely prefer the unarmored knights.! Those are the true pieces, with the armored knights thrown in as a novelty. I sent hand sketches, computerized designs, and photos found online, in order to create the knights. Oleg then created clay models as a first draft. I still need to get a nice wooden board that fits this set and a display case but here are some additional photos!

@brianmccann  A hearty congratulations on the Oleg Raikis set! May it bring you a lifetime of memorable victories and blunders on the board. Can't wait to see more pics.

What type of display case did you have in mind? Something custom, similar in style to the below coin cabinet? Interior LED museum lights are optional. Hah!

This is exactly what I'm looking for haha. Where can I find such a thing?

Love these knights. There can be a tendency for dynamic-looking knights to become inappropriately eye-catching on the board, either because they're too big or too complex. These are perfect: movement, character, a remarkable pose, but fit in perfectly on the board next to the other pieces.

You're making me want some now.

Beautiful.....I hope you get much pleasure from owning such gems.

Check out Etsy seller "CoinsandMoreItaly". They look pretty reputable. 5 star rating, 1000+ sales. They sell display cases for a wide variety of collectibles like: coins, pens, knives, zippos, etc. I imagine they can customize a chess case for you fairly easily. Good luck!

Awesome, thanks! Also what size board did you use for your angry knight set? I like the fitment of the pieces in your photos. It is a 3.5" set?

Yep. The Kings are exactly 3.5" (90mm) height. With 1.4" (36mm) bases. The board has 2" (50mm) squares.

Some more on-board photos. The white side is my favorite. The black side has an aged style on the stain that is very apparent on some pieces (like the rook). Interesting design choice but gives other pieces some additional depth. Overall extremely happy with the set!

Wits-end

Great set up! Time for battle.

Clearly obvious why you're happy with the set....It's a beauty!

Pawnerai

@brianmccann  It's awesome to see the pieces on a board in play. Love seeing the natural grain of the wood. I even like seeing the aging on the black stain from Oleg's brushwork! Is a JLP board in the future?  A "Raikis x JLP" colab.

For me, once I got over the "precious" nature of the pieces and just used them, I loved them more and more. Leave the pieces out and use them for a month. There are 100 year old Jaques sets that have survived decades of HARD use. Enjoy!

Oh my, very nice pictures, and beautiful pieces! The pairing which the walnut/maple chess board is also very nice. Could you provide some more details about the board please?

(And maybe an overview picture of the pieces in starting position on the board, if the opportunity arises? nervous)

Oleg has created a new variation, the "Armored Staunton":

Just my own opinion.....An "instant classic"!

Just when I thought I was done wanting more sets, this has to pop up! happy

What material are the chess pieces carved in?

Do they have a website?

These pieces are boxwood and stained boxwood; Oleg has a website, however, it's in Russian and more of a general display of his past work (his recent work, like this set, is not displayed). If you're interested in ordering a set, you can send me an inbox message, or you can try to reach Oleg directly at magiccarver@gmail.com . Oleg makes sets to order, so the set can be made in other materials (e.g., African Blackwood, Bokaut, Mammoth Ivory).

@MGT88

Has Oleg ever thought of doing an "Enhanced Raikislai" with each piece having the same size and dimensions as the original Raikislai, but with the artistic flourishes / enhancements of the first picture in this post?
