Opinion on this antique Staunton chess set
Let's summon the Three Magi on this: @efimLG47 @greghunt @ipswichmatt Is 2000 dollars/1500 gbp a reasonable deal?
so impressive weight and feel.
The box in good shape and all original as is the paper label. The box
lacks key which apparently is standard and some wear to interior baize.
Be interested to hear if it’s a fair price given the condition.
I am not an expert on Jaques sets. The set is tournament size in good condition, but relatively "young", i.e. not as rare as earlier, 19th century sets. The price level for chess sets is currently quite high in general, so the price is ok, but not a steal IMO. Tim Millard is numbering his offers consecutively and he just added REF 2045 and REF 2046 today. Taking into account that this one is REF 1979 it can be assumed that it is already on offer for quite a while. The fact that it did not sell for what is likely several months may be an indication that the price is regarded as too high by potential buyers, so this would probably be a reason to talk about the price and see, if Tim is willing to give a discount. That would be my approach if I were a Jaques collector (which I am not).
Buy what makes you happy. If you like the set enough and have the money, then do so. The important thing is the joy of owning a set, especially one that grows old along with you.
You could always buy a modern Jaques chess set.
