Opinions about modern Chavet sets

I have been looking to buy a vintage Chavet B207A set. Sadly I missed some good ones back since May. I have considered buying a modern version in a size 5 just to use for studying. Aobo-shop.es had them for sale at one time for 65 Euro but is currently out of stock. I checked eBay and the prices for the modern version seems very expensive. Is there any difference between the 65 Euro version offered by Aobo-shop.es and modern ones offered at eBay for $300 USD?

Here is the Hobo-shop.es version:

Here is the eBay 121/5 for $329 https://www.ebay.com/itm/184949194964?hash=item2b0fd4c0d4:g:9rQAAOSwWSJg82rI

Here is the eBay 101/5 for $295 https://www.ebay.com/itm/255056905206?hash=item3b629383f6:g:-wIAAOSwMIVg8pSJ

Thanks in advanced.

That 121/5 from eBay is the same as from Aobo (or Variantes in France, the same mother company). They have been out of stock since Jan/Feb this year, and around end of April/beginning of May they had restock size 5 briefly and sold out again in few days.

If you want I still have some Chavet sets you can buy. I ask the regular price and shipment. Message me if you're interested.

Re: the posted Chavet 101/5. Note the round, spherical Queen finials as opposed to the current nipple/gumdrop shape.

As I'm sure you are aware, there are no North American retailers who sell Chavet sets. Any new Chavet set will require shipping from Europe with the associated added costs/time. Definitely message @bananamoon to see what he has left. If budget allows, you should buy 2 (or more) sets from him to offset the costs related to shipping. That second set (or more) could EASILY be sold domestically in the US.

Congratz mister buddy! When it comes to the queen's top, whether it's a nipple or a ball I like them both.

@MCH818  Wow. You pulled the trigger on that 3.5" unweighted, modern Chavet for 3 bills? Congrats. They all look pretty straight too. For 3 hundred did you consider that green Harrods Chavet set that's been on eBay for months now? That set almost lured me into my wallet... Although, I get that "Harrods Green" color is not for everyone. I think it looked pretty awesome. Especially the old gentler Chavet Knight carving.

Good on ya @MCH818 for scratching the itch. I am sure you won’t regret it… as you’ve noted, sometimes the regret comes with the ones that slip away. 👍

Yes, worthy of the one called mister buddy!

@MCH818  Has it really been a year already since that B210 was posted on the forum? Time flies! If we are thinking of the same B210, that set was not mint. The Knight had a big crack on it. But considering it's age and rarity, it's ok to overlook.

180Euro is a bit easier to swallow. Especially when it's something you've been wanting for a year now. These Chavet sets are difficult to find here in the US at any price. When you put it in perspective, that's the price of one fancy dinner. Yolo!

Don't worry about babying your Chavet set too much. They are made to be played with. Nothing intricate in the carving to chip. And since they are unweighted, they don't have "mass" when stored in the box. 100 year old Jaques sets have survived a century of play and loose storage in wood boxes with just a few chips, scuffs, and dents. Your Chavet set will play wonderfully. Don't give it a second thought. Enjoy the heck out of them.

I've been treating my Chavet set roughly, similar to my plastic sets that I barely worry about. And it looks no different than when I got them. OTB play with a 7 year old. A few dropped pieces here and there. Storage in a zippered pouch. All loose and rattling around. They're completely fine.

I use my Oleg set on a wood board for reading and following along to YouTube videos. Still in the honeymoon phase happy.png

If it's a set I want to keep and use, then I'd put felts underneath. It's really easy to do, just make sure you have cloth scissors to cut it clean around the base.

I like to slide pieces over the board so in a way you can see it as protecting the board yes.

Wow, this looks great.  I personally do not care whether it’s a ball or tear drop.  This reminds me of my HoS Liberty set that I have had and played with regularly and quickly for well over 16 years.  The pieces are loose in zippered pouches and it gets rough play without damage.

I also really like the looks of the original Chavet sets, very nice.

I don't think I see those knots anymore...I think I'm used to it to see one or two knots in every Jura wood sets I have lol

Very nice design, I like the knights a lot, just miss the eyes, some chavet knights come with eyes and others no I don't know if it depends on the manufacturer or the set number or what. It is a simple design but a very pleasure to play with, for sure.

If you feel you have a bricohero inside you,  you can try to add weight to your pieces, I posted how I do that time ago here:

Quite simple and no special tools needed. Just take care to not hold the pieces will drilling them as shown in one of the pictures!
