So I guess a quality/higher end plastic tournament sized set, if such a thing exists.  What did a set cost when they were in production?

current one for sale:

40$ but you can find them for way less. the yellow color makes them unpopular.

I got 2 sets of the yellow ones i would not mind selling off at some point. Im one of the obsessed ones who cant stand the color.

Looks good to me. I have three of the original sets. I also have the rip off from Mexico. Which is lighter in color and doesn't weigh nearly as much. Your set looks perfect to me. LOVE the originals happy.png

A few years ago I bought a set of triple weighted tournament pieces, I think from Wholesale Chess.  I'm happy with them just curious how the Ultimate Chess peices would differ.

Cool, thanks for your input! That's awesome that you have a few original sets. They'll probably only go up in value as they gain notoriety .

Yeah I love my set too. They look, feel, weight, size.... so good.

BTW I drool every time I see you post one of your Chavet sets lol. I hope to get my hands on one some day.

Some people (like myself) just love the way they look first and foremost. I love the chunkiness of the pieces and the pleasant cream color of the white pieces for example. Other details about individual pieces are particularly aesthetically pleasing to me. The hype about the set makes it even more desirable too I suppose

i own the Ultimate plastic original and also the new version.  I also have owned and used that set from Wholesale Chess.

Now, I prefer wood pieces because of the way they look and handle.  The House of Staunton Liberty Series set is great for Blitz.  I have owned this set in Rosewood since 2000 or so, when Frank Camaratta first came out with it.  It wears like iron.

But, the Ultimate Original set is a very well balanced and weighted plastic set.  I agree that the Cream color of the original white pieces is also very nice.

The bulkiness of the pieces also makes this set very nice to handle and play with.  I can see why it was so popular when it was being produced.

That Wholesale Chess set is alright, but not necessarily exceptional.  Don't get me wrong, there are no real problems with that set.  It just isn't as popular as the Ultimate set was.

Another set that was exceptional was the Drueke Players Choice set.  With its wide bases, that set also handles and plays very well.  Of course they quit making that set back in the early 1990's.  Today that same design and exceptional handling can be had by a plastic set sold by Chessusa.com that looks like a reproduction of the original.  Also the Wood Drueke Reproduction, 2nd version, sold by the House of Staunton is a very close to identical wood version to the plastic original.

But, the original Ultimate really is a very nice and exceptional set.  It is really nice in both looks and handling.

The boxwood and (real) ebony Ultimate set is also very nice.

Vinyl and /or mouse mats with non brigt white second color, like green on green or grey on grey:

even chess.com uses green and green as their default color scheme. Very much not the same as bright white and green you can get on all the mousepad boards currently on the market.

BattleDuck,

I also have my wood grain mousepad chess boards too!  But you are looking for something in the more basic line, right?

I already own 4 of your wood grain mats.

My favorite is the walnut and maple I own two of them, BUT they have a misprint. Border of the g2-g3 square has a two pixel wide while line of no wood grain. If you ever do a new printing that fixes it I’d gladly buy a couple more of those boards.

Some people are ok with stark colors, personally i dont like it due to contrast with pieces and eye strain. Im not a fan of black or white as colors for the board, hence gery gery, green light green. etc. Im not the only one, these are colors bery often chosen by people who play online where they can select board color. again, even chess.com themselves use that as default color scheme. and there are no boards on the market in those squares. at all. closest are your walnut and maple boards and the grey\ off white from chess house. (not surprising that they constantly sell out of their grey ones both the 20 and the 17 inch variety. no one else in the whole world even bothers to offer boards in that color, a color that again, is one of the most popular ones for online chess.

to me something like this is great:

but hundreds of thousands of players each week use this color scheme:

and it NOT dark green and bright white that is usually offered in roll up boards.

People also choose blue and light blue often for online chess:

Super popular color schemes for playing on the computer than no one has made into real boards yet.

I’ll second the grey on darker grey.

I do like the wood grain printed mouse pads. However some of the ones that come from Shelby do seem to have a bleeding effect on the colors. There is one that is from an Italian vendor that looks spot on. Wonder if you can get better print quality for those mouse pad wood grain prints?

Shelby,

Can a silicon, or mouse pad be made with no notation? green/white or brown/white.

Where did you buy this from? Where can I buy this set today in the year 2024.

Thank you
