My most expensive chess set is a Drueke wooden one, the only one of mine where the black pieces are ebony. It's not the best. A couple of the black pieces have developed cracks, and it's just a bit larger than ideal for play.
My best is this one bought from USCF many years ago. As I recall, it was on sale for less than the normal price, but I don't recall the numbers now. When I used it in tournaments it was with a vinyl roll up board, although I have a board bag that would hold the board shown. We'll see if this link displays the picture; attaching it doesn't seem to work.

Holy crap Mike, that is possibly the most beautiful set I have ever seen. The knights are especially stunning. What manner of ivory is that?
Goodnightmike, your Jaques Cantonese Ivory set is drop dead gorgeous!
Thanks NM Impractical, I'm glad you enjoyed it

Thanks Floating Duck, I'm no ivory expert so I can't answer your question
Mike: where did you obtain the Ivory set?
I got this set many years ago from a local 85 year old collector who was dissolving his collection
Most of my chess pieces were bought long enough ago that I no longer know exactly what I paid for them. Probably, my most expensive set is a Drueke ebony and boxwood one, the only one I have where the black pieces are ebony. It's not my best. Some of the black pieces are cracking around the bases, which I've perhaps stabilized with some wood putty, it's a bit larger than I like, and I'm not crazy about the design of the bishops.
My best is probably this. The board is actually fairly new, and when I've taken these pieces to tournaments I've used them with a green and white vinyl roll-up. But I really like the pieces, and they must be among my more expensive.

Some beautiful chess sets here.
This thread is not about posting high end chess sets this thread is about posting the best you've got, so if you have the best chess set which is magnetic, that's fine post it as well don't be shy.
This HOS red and white lacquered Dubrovnik used to be my favourite. The board is not mine; it is a stock photo. They look lovely on my black and white ebony and boxwood board.
This chess set used to be my fathers. It was left behind in his house by the retreating German army in 1945. This was in Czechoslovakia! It holds the most sentimental value for me. My dear dad passed away not long ago.
Honza66 that's a fabulous set and great story to it as well. What size are the board & pieces? Just wondered, it's hard to tell from photos. Amazing it's still in such great condition!
I have several higher end sets. Not sure which is the most expensive, but I like this one a lot. Only problem is I'm not sure of the make or model, since the seller didn't have any of that information. It's boxwood and ebony with a 4" king, but that's all I know. It's not an old set. The pieces have a beautiful finish and are VERY heavy, at least 3X if not more. The bottoms are slanted as you can see with small black leather pads underneath. Does anyone have any idea who made this and the model? I can usually figure that out for myself, but in this case I don't have a clue. Thanks for any help!
Let me tell you my favorite chess set story.
Some decades ago, when I was working in Center City Philadelphia, I passed a store during my frequent lunch-hour walks that had, among many other things, gorgeous chess sets. One day I walked in and looked at them closely. Fell in love with a beautiful wood set -- very sleek, very smooth, oh so beautiful! I decided I HAD to have it. It cost a little over $300. I didn't have that kind of money, but the storekeeper said he would put that set on layaway for me if I would pay some amount every week. Deal! I put down a deposit and every week came in to pay a bit more. Finally, after many months, the set was mine!
I loved it dearly, but it wasn't long before I realized I'd made a mistake. My little apartment at that time didn't have any space to display this gorgeous set. What good was it sitting in the closet? So the next time my son from California came to visit, I offered it to him. After all, he played chess occasionally and maybe with time, he would teach this wonderful game to his young children.
Some years passed and I visited him in his beautiful home. I looked around to see where that fantastic chess set might be displayed. I saw it nowhere. I didn't want to ask, but finally curiosity got the better of me.
"Son, do you still have that chess set?"
He looked quite embarrassed.
"Well, you see, Mom, it's this way. We had it displayed here," pointing to a conspicuous spot on an end table. "Then the kids decided to play. They play chess a little differently." Now he looked crestfallen and ashamed. "They would throw one piece, then another, and another and another..... Finally, the King lost the cross on top of his head, the knight lost his head......"
I shushed him. "It's okay, son. I understand."
Lesson learned. Never buy something you can't afford that you don't have room to display.
I went the other way ... never had kids .
As always when i look at this marvellous and unique chess set...
That is one of the most wonderful knight ever seen...
may be the only one i really envy... and I Love the colour
Thanks MySet. I'm glad you enjoy my set and knights
