Those legs were made to go with that board.....Talk about a great find.
Some people have all the luck.

I don't have many sets, but I have been interested in getting a Soviet set for a while. Someone in these forums mentioned a Ukrainian seller on Etsy -- Oldset -- who does quality reproductions of classic Soviet sets, and I checked out what was on offer. There were about a dozen sets in the $200-$300 range, and very interesting designs. I bit the bullet on a reproduction that is called the Scarlet Empress set, which was produced between 1935 and 1945. I've seen photos of the original and my set is an extremely faithful repro. It came yesterday and I'm pretty in love with it:
The wood is beautifully turned and the finish is flawless. The king is 10.8 cm with a 36 mm base. It's nicely weighted, and it has red felt on the bottoms of the black pieces and black felt on the bottoms of the red pieces. And there are extra queens.
Yup it was me.....Oldset does amazingly high quality work, imo.
From my particular set's overall appearance and finishing,I truly believe this seller is a bit underpriced.
Gorgeous set KUDZU9......Andy would have loved it.-
Btw,I also have that board you show......Really a nice piece of work and the smallest of my three boards.
magictwanger- Thanks for turning me on to Oldset. High quality, unique stuff, and often only one of each set available. I've seen a couple of Oldset's previous sets I liked that aren't currently in stock, and the seller said they could do any of them in a couple of weeks if I wanted to do an order.

magictwanger- I agree. Better buy another one of your favorites before our favorable comments cause prices to increase.
The thing is, I'm done adding anymore sets to my collection.....Nineteen tourney sets,3 travel sets and 3 nice boards is enough for me.
I need to get through my books and all the other things that help in "playing". Of which I am not the best around.-
Btw,KUDZ,I tried to "friend" you.....What's up?
magictwanger-
I'm still getting the hang of this site and just saw the friend request, which I confirmed (I think ).

Yeah, same here. I think pics of all my sets are scattered somewhere back through this thread. Maybe some are in the Reproduction thread. I'm too lazy to go look.
I haven't posted much lately but I've enjoyed seeing all the sets, boards, tables and such. Many thanks.
This is my metal chess set. The queen is centre in the picture. The board is about 18" and made of marble and very heavy. The pieces are metal. I think pewter. They're kind of silver vs bronze but the colours are so similar it makes it impossible to play. It looks good though as a decorative piece. I've no idea who made it or where it came from. I'm not sure how metal works but I may find a way of colouring (or discolouring) the pieces and make it playable.
Yes. It looks lovely but is not practicable and I'm nervous about colouring or dying the metal. I've got an old wooden staunton I can use to play but when I saw this second hand I had to have it.
Nice...and if it were mine I'd want it to be playable. There are various products you can buy to stain or patina pewter. I would try giving the silver/pewter pieces a dark tone. I think a silver-black and gold set would look good. It's not that hard to put a finish on metal, particularly if that is pewter, but you should watch a couple of YouTube videos so you know what's involved and the dos and don'ts
@RichColorado - certainly some interesting boards you have recently posted. Needing legs… I recently found some legs and posted the story in a separate thread. In short, I matched this reconditioned board with these ‘free’ legs picked up from a neighbour during an annual hard-rubbish collection that the local council runs.
