Post Your Chess Sets

@Jaionix Those are really nice pieces - including the knights (which I'm ridiculously picky about). I've never seen rooks in that design before either (nested tops). Proper attention-grabbers! Lucky you!

Thank you sir, appreciated.

Is that Isle of Lewis set carved or cast? And where did you get it? It's probably the nicest reproduction I've seen of this set.
You can get a set here. I Originally I was looking for a set that I could use on my vertical board and these fit perfectly. There made with high quality resin, and I can attest to that. These are made well, that you could throw at a wall, and won't find damage.
I have a full size replica, that is made of stone that can chip, just by looking at it. It still boggles the mind, that you can't find a close replica of the real Lewis Pieces. Plus most doesn't distinguish from having the same kings, queen, all four bishops are the same, etc.....
Even tho these are smaller, I think for me, the nicest version of Isle Of Lewis pieces that I found, that all the pieces are different, and they are made well. The price is so cheap, I may just by another set for safe keeping, before there is no more left.
@Jaionix Gorgeous set and board. I love the opposition created by the different Kings, Rooks, bishops and knights between black and white. I also love the rope beading around the bases of each piece (including the pawns) it shows that this set wasn't just turned, every piece and pawn has been carved to some extent. Incredible detail and quality.
That board, in birdseye maple and Paduak with Ebony trim, beautiful. It is so gorgeous I'd be afraid to play on it.
Could you share some details on the set and the board with us? Where did you get them from? Custom or stock? I'd love to hear it.
Hi Ibuidchess. My Grandfather had this beatiful wood King custom set. Like a set you would find in some old castle of lengends. It was a large set, the pieces were a joy to hold, with a distinctive sound (which was music to my ears),when the pieces hit the board. So satisfying to a kids ears. I don't know what became of that board, but it left such an impression on me, I wanted something similar in my life. Mission in life I guess .
Trying to find that perfect set fo me (as you all can allude to) is major pain in the @#$%^. Its ether the the set is good, but the knight is off, or the knight is perfect but the king, and bishop sucks. I was in that moment of failure, that the idea to mismatch similar sets, to get that perfect set I wanted. I was able to find two very close sets. The Double Rook, knights, and Bishops from this set, I'm still trying to find the link to the other set, that I used for the other King, rook, different bishop. Making two different army's was another plus, and the pieces are so close your never distracted playing. I've played whole games with guests before they even notice the different army's. Come to think about it, I still have the other mirrored pieces complete set still boxed up, thinking now I should maybe sell them.
The board I bought from here. My receipt shows I bought it for $1085, but that was 10 years ago, and the newer link shows it for a higher price. They have other boards very much like mine listed, but different woods for only $1200, and many others for a lower price, but still very nice.
Your analysis of bird's eye maple was dead on, althogh, its made of cocobolo not paduak. From my understading cocobolo is more of true rosewood, in that is doesn't darken overtime like paduak, and its a much harder wood. I can attest to that, after 10 years those rosy squares still look the same.
Now I know the price to do this hit my pocket books at the time, but the joy this board has giving me over the last 10 years is immeasurable. Its my main board I play on, and haven't bought another board since.
I have it set up on my main table, and here is sample pic of mirrored pieces still in the box. Notice the rosewood double rook and boxwood knight, opposite from the top pic rook and knight.

Wow, thanks for the awesome full bodied response. That's an incredible mixed sex you've made, it also looks like to cost you a good chunk of change. I didn't realise that you mixed the sets between the white and black armies, but upon seeing the Excalibur set I can see what you did there: https://www.chessbazaar.com/the-excalibur-luxury-artisan-series-chess-pieces-in-ebony-box-wood-lacquered-4-6-king.html
Thanks for sharing, super cool, and my bad on the cocobolo, it's not a wood I encounter often but I see the appeal!
Overall a fantastic den and media room set up.Love the audio and video set up too.
Of course the chess display(and especially that staggeringly gorgeous board) is superb.
Where's the door to the wine cellar?

Well, I never drank growing up, but I have a tool cellar if that counts for anything.
Greatest theme set I've ever seen. (Not mine) I believe only three were made. From Germany around the time of World War 1.

Wow. That is really something else. Imagine playing chess with this set, holding the pieces in your hand. Must be a unique experience in itself...
I would be totally distracted by such set

Yeah, I'd have to agree about that themed set. I can't recall ever seeing a nicer one. Do you know how tall the king is so we might have some frame of reference? The detail is incredible.

STERLING SILVER, 925
12 x 31 x 31 inches board (30.5 x 78.7 x 78.7 cm)
7-1/4 inches king (16.2 cm)

Ok, that's WAY bigger than I was thinking...massive actually. To see it in person would be breathtaking. (much less play on it)

In the "Show us" thread a week or so ago I promised to post up something so here it is. In honor of Wesley Sos' upcoming win in the World Chess Tour Super Bet in Romania, here is my Rumanian Coffee House "Delicate" Set circa 1970. That's right...Rumania. I'm sorry you all have to be the Guinea pigs for my new lens (a 60mm Macro) but such is life. After playing a few games on the original board it quickly became obvious why it's called the DELICATE set. It's so crowded that you spend half the game knocking over your opponents pieces and the other half knocking over your own. The squares are 1.5" and that's fine considering the small bases but the pieces are SO top heavy and unweighted that it just turns into a hot mess. I moved it to a Drueke with 1.75" squares and the problem was solved immediately. You wouldn't think a quarter inch could make that much difference but it does. And yes I know...that's what she said.
Again, Sorry for some of these shots but I'll sort it out eventually. I'm not sure what this wood is but it's beautiful. A previous owner defaced it with a red sharpie so if anyone has any suggestions I'd be grateful. Thanks.
Gorgeous sets and wonderful display.....Captain America shield on wall?
Btw,that stunning board in post #2290.....I'm salivating over it! I love platform boards.Where is it from? I hope I don't have to start the sales pitch to the wife.
Every collector needs at least one of these gems.
