😁😁

I'm not a collector myself but I do appreciate a nice chess set. This thread is my favourite on here for all the gorgeous sets that you guys post.

IanShawDulin

My favorite.

LittlePuffling

Some sets you just want to play with as soon as you see them. This is definitely one of them. And I love the board with rounded corners. Beautiful.

That cut in the edge of the chessboard, assuming it was delivered that way, would give some people on this board a heart attack. wink.png

A birthday present for my sister. I didn't put the pieces on the board, they were on display that way in the store with scotch tape on the bottom of each piece.

You better don't ask Chuck or Michael or Holger that, as they have many, MANY more sets.

Well, you better don't ask some of the collectors not posting in this forum or in social media at all, because some of them have many, MANY more sets than Chuck, Michael or me! happy
Cheers,
Holger

You can never have too many chess sets. I also have many sets stored in boxes from are move. My wife brought up 2 HOS chess sets the other day from the basement she found.

My wife would argue that point with you. At last count, 250+ full size sets, and about 80 or so “travel-size” sets. About 200 more than I need, really.

LittlePuffling

About 329 more than you need I'd say, but who's counting 😁

The boom the past few years has not resulted in the sale of large numbers of chess sets. Chess has become a video game.

Strongly disagree

Nearly every retailer was out of stock for months/years on basically every chess set available. Noj’s waiting list swelled from 4 weeks to 4 years. Yes, chess thrives online, but the boom was clearly felt in stores as well.

In stores - and on flea markets!

I've been visiting the Berlin flea markets a lot recently, in search of chess sets.

There were almost none. On the big market at Tiergarten I found maybe one set with damaged pieces one day and one with missing pieces another day.

This surprised me because a lot of the stuff you see on flea markets these days is stuff from the households of my grandparents' generations. Their dishes, their jewellery.
So where are their chess sets???

Last week I asked one of the sellers, and he said chess sets are flying off their tables "wie warme Semmeln" (like warm bread rolls). He said, people are playing chess again, and especially the youngsters are really keen on chess sets.

Can someone pls confirm if I actually got what O paid for? I bought this https://www.chessbazaar.com/reproduced-french-lardy-exclusive-tournament-size-weighted-wooden-chess-pieces-in-indian-rosewood-box-wood-3-75.html but the chess pieces doesn't look like what's been advertised. the color of the black pieces are not the same. Appreciate if someone can advise. thanks

chessmaster_diamond

Yep, that looks like Sheesham.

Thanks guys. but on their website it says black pieces made of dalbergia Latifolia which is supposed to be a more red color wood.

Quite disappointed tbh with this being my first chess set from CB.

I think your set is correct technically. As with how CB described the wood. As Indian rosewood and golden rosewood are the same tree. But how CB markets the set is by naming the sets Indian rosewood for a more red color wood. And golden rosewood for the more brownish sets of the same wood.

Rosewood is a great wood for chess pieces. And the sets made of rosewood are cheap not because rosewood is a poor wood. Rosewood chess sets are cheap because rosewood is very common in the world.

Yes, that seems odd. The photos on the website point to a lovely deep red colour and the pieces you received are not that. On the flip side, the pieces you received have a lovely grain and look attractive but that’s no consolation if it was the deep red colour that you wanted based off marketing photos on their website.

What has been CB’s response? Hopefully they respond if you send them photos that show such a distinct difference from the photos on their website. It would surprise me if there’s not some way that they set this straight for you and for you to get pieces reflecting the colour you want. Fingers crossed.

Thanks mate..This is the email trail. Their response doesn't make sense to me. I've whatsapp one of the managers. Will see what they come back with

Today I visited the World Chess Club in Berlin.

Very nice location, I'll have to go there when I have more time. Nice tables, and the bar looks very promising indeed.

They also have a tiny store where you can get all the stuff from the World Chess online shop.

So I made a bit of an impulse purchase, I bought the plastic World Chess set for 39€

It's really nice :-)

But it was also cool to see the wood sets up close. The shape is really nice, the pieces have a certain unobtrusive elegance.

And now I'm gonna start saving for the Studio set, which is 87% the size of the official set. I won't be able to afford the Cabinet set or one of the new Selection sets anyway :-(

Looks like you had a great time and acquired a very nice set....Lucky you!happy

Thanks for the post dK. I was interested to read your observations. As mentioned in other threads - I am on the ‘like’ side of these pieces and while I don’t have a set, I reckon you made an excellent impulse buy. 👍
