Molto Bella!
Post Your Chess Sets

Not weighted or felted but tall and heavy enough.. strange set, but when you play the forms work well together, so I like it! Plus the board- close to- monochrome like the ashtapada (the unchequered 8x8 of tschaturanga).

The bishops look like garden gnomes https://www.williams-sonoma.com/products/ziggy-the-gnome-garden-statue/

Thanks, MCH! mjeman, garden gnomes, a fair judgement Knights, bishops, even the set as a whole looks a little over-styled. But, to my surprise, the form of the bishops so far away from resembling any other piece proves super relaxing during play. Like relieving and inspiring. I found myself broadly smiling moving them. Marveling at garden gnomes!

That set looks to be an amalgam of a number of different designs … I would not be surprised if someone like me - a beginner woodturner - has made pieces inspired from a range of different pieces… 🤔
Greetings friends,
I am wondering if someone here more knowledgeable than I am could help identify if this set is worth anything / worth repairing.
It was owned by former 60's and '70s Chess Life columnist Robertson Sillars, best known for quipping something along the lines of "castling is for wusses" and "castle early and often". If I'm not mistaken his kids were all master level and according to this reddit post, one of them won the Chicago women's open in 1963. Whether or not any of that has any clout that adds to these older wooden chessmen, I do not know, and have my doubts. As it is, I'm presuming it worthless unless someone more astute than I am suggests otherwise. The set is at least from the 1970's
The main reason I ask about it is because it looks similar to some Lardy's I've seen through some cursory google searches, and while I do collect chess sets, I really don't know enough about those to tell value from firewood (tend to go after more obscure stuff).
Anyways, I'll share some pictures:

So, to wrap-up:
1) is this a Lardy / otherwise worth anything
2) if it's worth anything, is it therefore worth the time/effort to replace the black pawn, fix the knight?
3) assuming on the off-chance the answer to the first two questions is "yes", does anybody know what's the best way to restore them
it's a neat set, a little light for my taste, but it is weighted. curious for anyone's input, thanks in advance.
thanks for reading my post

That was fun to watch - thanks!

What chess set would that be?
This is the video of the YouTuber who made it and others like it
Hi,
This weighted wooden set belonged to be grandad who lived in India in the 1930s/40s. I really like the simplistic/ elegant design and jewelled eyes of the knights, but as you can see, a white rook and black pawn are missing, so any help identifying the design would be gratefully received!
Phil
Apparently, your granddad had good taste....It's a nice set and seems to be in excellent shape. I hope you get a lot pleasure from owning it.

There are talented people who can duplicate the pieces for you.
Today I visited the World Chess Club in Berlin ... I made a bit of an impulse purchase, I bought the plastic World Chess set for 39€.
And now I'm gonna start saving for the Studio set, which is 87% the size of the official set. I won't be able to afford the Cabinet set or one of the new Selection sets anyway :-(
Your Academy set looks great. Enjoy it! I too want the Studio set.
Do you think these sets have a different visual impact in person than they do online?
This is a chess set i'm playing with lately, a bit retro. The board is from an Italian company "Dal N." and the pieces I don't know for sure. The Knight is a bit chavet shaped. I guess the set dates from the 80's or 90's.
