Love the rooks on the second set. Very strong.
Post Your Chess Sets

Man, I love this set. It was love at first sight. I actually prefer the straight rooks and as for the queens, I like the ones with the sunken heads. The knights do look a little out of place and I don't just mean the pedestals. They really need a total rethink. Still...it's a BEAUTIFUL set and I'd have it in a minute. Alas...so many sets, so little money. Congrats ckaszas, and thanks for sharing!
chessbazaar version has straight rooks. No doubt, HOS version is equally good ...

Yes, but the chessbazaar queens are a deal breaker for me. The ones that HOS has that don't have the head poking up through the crown are fantastic. It's just my opinion, of course.
forked again...I had the same thoughts about copyright infringements when I first looked into this set. Apparently it's the wild west as far as India is concerned. The HOS website claims the set was designed by Camaratta but the Chessbazaar site makes no reference at all to it's origin.
No doubt that the chess fraternity owe a lot to Frank Camaratta since he's in the business since 1989 and the likes of chessbazaar came to the market just a decade back. But merely writing a name and marketing a set with Frank Camaratta doesn't mean that the set was designed by him. HOS should show the drawings of the set, just in case!

This is from one of my four sets. It is the oldest and most interesting (at least to me). They are in ok condition over all.

What are they called?
Mine is a Mexican Bone set.

I completely agree, big time! I was in awe when I first saw that amazingly beautiful and well thought out set up of a display.....STUNNING!

Ok, just bought my third set in a little over a month. Do I have a problem? Went a little bigger this time with 4.4" king, 2.375" squares. It was their last clearance (1/2 price) Empire Series at HoS. Love the art deco style. My favorite board also.
Beautiful! I've ignored this set until your pictures! You were fortunate as it looks like you scored one of the last Ebony sets, as they are out of stock on that now; only the Blood Rosewood is left.
Can you tell us about the board? Is that HOS also?

My late 1960's Peter Ganine chessmen. The same type (not the same set) I learned to play on in 1966. although those were black & white and these are blended. The King base is only 1.5", but because of the height of the pieces they are perfect for a 2.25" board. No pic of them on my Drueke tournament board, but in the box they came in. Not the most valuable set, I have sets that cost way more, but my favorite from a sentimental aspect.
Hi all, my first chess pieces arrived, I got the fierce knight set from RCM, 89mm king, the king base covers about 80percent of the square, and the pawns are much bigger than recommended but I still love it. I made the chess board and I think the pieces compliment it beautifully. The walnut is quite similar to the pieces. I can see why people collect them, I want more already ha.

That is a cool set! I'd really like to see it on a board! Are they plastic?
Thanks, yes, all the Ganine pieces are molded plastic. The first ones were black and white. They also made brown and white on the same pattern, and this black & white swirled. The only thing that is a slight problem on these (to a perfectionist only) is that the molding leaves a flashing, or small nub of plastic on the top of each piece. I sanded them off with 6000 grit micromesh cloth (the Knights and the Bishops had the biggest issue) but even with the high grit had to be careful not to change the contour at the top of those pieces.
I’ll see if I have a pic of them on the board, I’m sure I do somewhere. BTW, these were a bit of a cultural presence in the late ‘60’s, and I’ve spotted them in shows as diverse as Star Trek TOS and Mission Impossible.

Beautiful pieces and board! 80% is right in there, I had an 82% setup for a while, and it played fine. The walnut matches your board perfectly, which has some beautiful grain in it by the way way. Thanks for sharing!
I like the knight design
