@JugglinDan

I'm not sure about selling it. Maybe I keep it.

Yes, I have shown some lack of education, not knowing what lardy is. especially as a chess lover.

But now I have learnt something new. Thanks.

Minuskel

I like the last Chess pieces posted from Smesq.

They remind me on the Imperial Chessman from Chessbazaar, but they are slidly different.

Nice inlaid table.  and Of course a wood burning stove makes a lovely backdrop for any pieces...

This chess piece will forever haunt my dreams. Not mine, but for $750usd this demon rat-dog knight set can be yours to play with after a tetanus booster shot. Available at a popular online auction site. Described as a 1920s Soviet Set.

The black specs could be flaking paint, black mold, or dried blood splatter.

UPDATE**

Ohwell. Shows what little I know... Satan's demon rat-dog set just sold for the full asking price of $750.

A plastic Drueke set that I haven't used in about 13 years. Originally came with a floppy board. I apologize for the bad pictures.

Recognized the chess board, it's from the Ambasador set. I love It, for the price I think it's such a good and particular looking set. Only downside is that they are not very weighted, but we can't have all.

Yes, a Ambasador set can be nice. They have usually those alternativ queens and kings, which I like very much (the queen is like a five pointed crown and the king is like a cage with four bows and a cross on top ... and they have also a bit of the opposite color from the oponent pieces in it.

That's "patina", that is. Not blood.

Did you see that thing?  It's blood, alright - bishop's blood. wink.png

That Drueke set is harder to come by than the famous Players Choice set.

One of my favorite purchases of all time. For lack of weights I would have hoped the King and Queen had wider bases. The King is like 4.25" tall with a base diameter of barely 1.5". The same exact size as the Bishop's. And extra Queens would have been a pleasant bonus.

More detail on the Knights to match the theme of the rest of the set would have been nice but considering I paid $50 for the whole set at the time, I'm quite happy. The Queen is my favorite piece in this set and it brings nostalgic memories. It also resembles a 3D version of the 2D styles for the King and Queen.

Totally agree, I personally really like the rook, It's a very detailed and satisfying piece, when you have It in your hands and can feel the carvings, such details are not very common even in a lot of more expensive sets. Plus the board it's gorgeous, practical (foldable and you don't see the infamous line in the middle thanks to intelligent decorations between the squares, and the pieces are stored inside the board) and also smells very nice ahahah. It's such a bargain for its price it's ridiculous.

I agree about the rook. And the smell is something I still obsess over after all these years. It's like brand new. Recently I got COVID for the first time and lost my ability to taste and smell. My biggest fear was not being able to smell the wooden sets again. 😄

Sorry to hear that GambitHawk I hope it's all in the past by now.

magictwanger

Sorry to hear about your loss of smell! I had Covid as well and wound up with pneumonia and a pulmonary embolism....Lucky for me I am totally 100% now.....WHEW!

Picked up what is my most basic wooden set yet: a small travel set (king's height = 6cm/2.36"). Probably paid too much even at the €20 I forked out, but I just found the knobbly bases cute.  Pieces are felted, but not weighted.

The owner couldn't tell me anything about it, but from the shape I'd say they could be Eastern European. Does any of you have an idea? The inside of the board has a backgammon pattern. Did people in Eastern Europe even play backgammon?

Yes Backgammon is played in Eastern Europe. Denmark is one of the major countries that play Backgammon. Marc Olsen is a famous Grandmaster in Backgammon from Denmark.

Not sure exactly where this couple is from but I would guess Russia or maybe Ukraine. I know that Backgammon is played heavily in Greece which is close to Bulgaria.

My newest set. Staunton Candidate Series with 4.2” kings, and a standard House of Staunton chess board with 2.5” squares. I love these pieces. They feel great, and the leather pads instead of felt pads feel great.

The board is really nice, and the pieces are glossy and fantastic! Although I don't typically like "glossy" pieces, they are quite lovely!

I don’t mind glossy, especially these. They have leather pads instead of felt, which are a nice added touch. I also have a set of the Staunton Fischer-Spassky pieces on the way.

My wife and I bought this stylish chess set in Palma de Mallorca decades ago:

We love this set very much so we have posted a couple of photos of it, along with the description of the pieces, on my blog:

Egg Shaped Modernist Chess Pieces

FuzzySloth

Small club sized metal Staunton set with 3 7/8” King.  Unknown date, but resemble the Jaques Marshall style from about 1900.  Extremely heavy and just replaced the red baize with black.  Vintage, yet industrial... love it!
