This rare Mid-Century Modern extruded aluminum chess set was designed by Austin Cox (A.S.I.D.) and manufactured by Alcoa Aluminum Company. The 32 pieces were cut from aluminum bars; the white army appearing in a natural aluminum finish, and the black army differentiated by black anodized sides with natural aluminum faces. The pieces are each signed and range in size from 4 7/8″ for the King down to 3″ for the pawns and are housed in a custom fitted walnut case with a blue tinted Plexiglas sliding door. Designed to be wall mounted, the case is 31″ long x 2 1/2″deep and 6” high. The case has some slight damage to one corner and the pieces are in excellent condition. The original board is also in excellent condition with the exception of some slight ghosting on the darker squares of the board because the set was always out with a match in play. I purchased this set for my late husband over 50 years ago as a wedding gift. Austin Cox sets are coveted by chess players around the world, and it is rare to find the complete set with all the pieces, the case, and the board. I am selling it for $2,000. plus $35 shipping.
