Refelting a 1849 Jaques reproduction

I recently ordered and received a jaques reproduction set, however the listing lied about the pieces bottoms and it came with leather instead of green felt. I know this is small but I prefer the green. So I’ve struggled finding any fitting precut bottoms and decided to do my own.

I’ve done a bit of research bit found varying opinions like some saying use wood glue or others saying hide glue (but I think they mean hide for legit antique sets) or using just regular felt vs billiards felt. Or in how to remove the leather bottoms? Can anyone help me out?

It's not easy to put leather pads back on, so why don't you try it first for a while see if it grows on you. You can always change the felts later on. Better safe than sorry wink.png

I've refelted before and it's easier than what I expected but if I were you I would do a test run with a plastic set. Here are a few tips. First is supplies:

-Get Billiard Cloth Worsted. I got mine from a billiard and game store as off cuts from when they install the cloth for very cheap. ~1 meter square for about $15 I selected a burgundy color but they had about 5 different shades of green.

- I used Super 77 which is what the Billiard installers use.

- Buy some cuticle scissors. This is very important.

I mocked up half a set (17 pieces) and cut put that section. Then using card board I sprayed the section and quickly and firmly placed the pieces on the cloth 2 at a time. I did again for the 2nd half. *I was surprised by how little of the cloth I used.

Then I used the cuticle scissors to first separate the individual pieces into its own little patch. I then used the curve of the scissors and the base itself to go around.

It comes out well IMHO but note that the felt comes to the edge.

You see in the finished pieces after changing the felt that the gap is gone.

If the time comes to change the felt of one of my other sets and I want to retain that gap I'll try a few different ideas I have. Overall I'm very happy with my results.
