I do believe that the automated lathes are coming from Germany. I also believe at least one chess carving place in India uses this lathe. Not 100% sure but remember reading about it. Of course there is still much hand carving to be done on a set even if you start out with an automated lathe unless it is one of those super sophisticated 3 axis ones I used to see used in the aerospace field decades ago that were super expensive to make and to program. I would imagine if one wanted and had unlimited amount of money you can program a machine to carve out knights even.
Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

I prefer hand made chess pieces rather then computer guided machines. While hand made pieces may have slight imperfections that is what makes them special. Knowing that a person spent hours to make that set makes me appreciate it more.
I really hope that day never comes when machines take over the world.

Sadly, we are I'm afraid far beyond that point already.

LMAO!
Does that Knight retain the fine original French polish that Tim Millard always refers to?
Be careful Carl.
I'm sure Frank really does have rights to it.

by far the best 1849 reproduction to date! taken from the Camaratta codex..... the "Bunnykins Knights" which Frank says he created and marketed first and of course we copied!
LOL, very funny
I must say that I do not care for the antiquing done on that Knight!!! It looks as if it has been lacquered!
Very good, Carl.

You're welcome Carl, you keep raising the bar for the best jaques repros ever!

Don't worry, Carl. I'm sure someone will find something to complain about. "The ears are too short, the ears are too long, the nostrils aren't wide enough, the nostrils are too wide, too many grooves in the cheek, the grooves are too deep, too long, too narrow, too wide, the mouth is open too wide, not wide enough, too many teeth, not enough teeth, the teeth are too prominent, the base is too high, too wide, too narrow..." yada yada yada.
But for this collector, that is one beautiful knight! Keep up the good work!
thank you Rob I am delighted with them! .....and I will keep up the work!

with the aid of Photoshop....antique look...who would know its a repro, seriously! ( well perhaps Alan would)
I will update when the full set is available....thank you for your kind comments.

In fairness that's the best copy of the early knight I've seen yet. The slightly bigger jowl and more open mouth are spot on.
Well, the point I was making was that the consistency of piece design is currently much more consistent than it used to be. Modern technology and techniques play into this.
