Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

Damn I miss the times when these OS sets were going for 200/300 euro max, striped ebony and all. They've become a bit too rich for me! Also, good-looking set, but hard to find the differences with previous iterations?

p.s. Just out of curiosity, can this set be gotten on its own, without board and box, and if so how much?

The Rolls RICE of Chess?!? Rolls of rice, it is making me HUNGRY thinking about it. "Kellogg's Rice Rolls" I can taste it now!!.

Dumb question... Why is the box from a Jaques set so important? Aside from proving authenticity, the pieces get all banged up inside. And these pieces are not exactly cheap.

Collectors want all the original parts that came with the items. Once massive sums of money are on the table reason is out of the window. Fewer collectible items still have the “box and papers” and since it is more rare it is worth more to collectors. No one is buying 5000$ chess sets because they want to play games with strangers on a park bench. Same rule goes for other collectibles too, old toys, watches etc.

I’m probably not the only one putting the pieces back in te box in layers of safety plastic... Accidents do happen.

I'd like to add another point  - since Jaques changed the design of the label every few years, the label on the box enables the date of the set to be easily determined - to within a few years

White hand signed/numbered labels were only produced in the first year, Howard Staunton was probably getting fed up by then lol, after that it was the printed facsimile with the number printed on, then after a few short years the numbering stopped...

Very nice! I prefer sets below 4" so will have to wait for the 3.75" Chessbazaar set to come back into stock. But this looks really good.

Why wait ? We have a cook in 3.5" far superior! 😉

Carl, is there a way to buy a leather board like that?

Yeah that is a nice set too but I already bought the HOS New Cooke 3 1/2" some years ago (along with most of Frank's timeless series as it was called back then).  The only "Jaques" inspired set I don't have is one that approximates the club 1849 dimensions but in a smaller size so it can fit on my favourite 55mm board.

What size Jaques reproductions are true to the originals.  Is it 3.5" for the library sets and 4" for the club?  Were there other sizes as well?

I think when Jaques first sold their sets they defined the size by base diameter not by height. But I think today this translates to 4 3/8" being Club size, 4" being called Small Club size, 3 1/2" Tournament size and anything smaller being referred to as Library size.
