@EZY1981 Who is making that set in India?
Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

I asked before but I'll ask again. Does it make sense to argue about who was first, when Jaques of London was first and never stropped doing what they do. The rest just copied jaques. No innovation in that. what am I missing?

That's not for me to say Mike, sorry
No problem I have an idea. Stay healthy and safe.

Perhaps you're missing the entire reason for this thread ? 😎😊
Bob, what you wrote makes a lot of sense.
Do we know who made the set used in the 1972 World Championship match wit Fischer and Spassky?
That makes sense as well.
I started playing Chess in 1988. I remember beginning to look at wood sets in 1989 or 1990.
Sure, the places I looked were limited, but I believe I hit all the major retailers in America. And I’m here to say the offerings were not that great as far as being high quality.
I talked with USCF sales along with other sellers. The Drueke wood set was about the best available. I did buy an Ebony set in 1991, and it cracked a lot in the next couple of years.
So I satisfied my self with a Drueke Rosewood for a few years before the manager of USCF Sales directed me to Frank who was just starting House of Staunton. This was when Athe USCF ran their own Book and Equipment sales in New York.
Anyway, Frank got me dedicated to wood sets. The other companies like Legend Products did sell wood sets, but the quality that Frank produced was noticeably a lot better. I had some friends within a 70 mile radius that would buy wood sets. We had quite the variety to compare.
I remember Dennis having just bought the Ambassador set from Legend Products while I just got my Marshall Series set from Frank. Dennis and I played a few games with each set just before and between rounds of a tournament I had organized and was directing. These sets were at about the same price. Dennis, a retired finance person for the US Post Office, started commenting that my Marshall set was much nicer than the Ambassador set he just bought a few days before. Well within 2 or 3 months, Dennis bought a Marshall Series set.
So while there were places having sets made, Frank’s were arguably a quality level above most of the others.
Well let's see pics for comparison. Talk is cheap.
Yeah, but you like cheap. Remember?
Looks like my weekend entertainment is about to begin.-
Actually Rummy and I now get along quite well.
Seriously, I guess that Jaques must have had their sets made in India after WW II.
Nice looking, here are my Knights from the top line Official Staunton set. The background is a solid mahogany chess box made in Italy. No veneer on this baby. Look at the bases of the Knights, I love it, and the whole set is like that.
Very nice looking knights; it's all about that back arch.
I'm really happy that everyone is getting along and able to express an opinion, regardless of popularity.I enjoy all you guys and respect the experts,of which I am definitely not!

I see hos also have a golden collectors series and they also state this is based on the jaques 1849 design....looks like a standard chess set to me, I don't see a jaques 1849 knight here at all.

I don't see an 1849 replica either. But it is a really nice set all the same.

Yes it's really nice
$6k lol
I think it's because that one comes with a board and box; I just looked at it on the HoS website and they have the set alone for $2000 USD (which is still ridiculously high lol). It's a nice set and it's using genuine ebony for the black pieces, but I think $2000 USD is a bit of a stretch on this one; then again, who knows, it has a 4.4" king, maybe ebony is really expensive these days.
I do note however, the house of Staunton have recently started offering their collectors series as an 1849......
