Yeah, not a fan of the knights either and the rooks look too short.

Agree. Chess Bazaar makes decent sets but nothing like HoS or OS. If I'm going to plunk down that sort of money I might as well save a few more shillings and get a better set. I simply don't like listing knights.

Here is the old timeless set from HoS:

In defense of Chessbazaar, though I had my share of aggravation, though all cleared up......

They are definitely capable of producing a superbly well made set!....My Glossy Empire Staunton Pieces were as close to my NOJ pieces as could be.Not quite as ne' plus ultra, but really good.

This was my last set I had gotten from C.B. and it was a nice surprise to see the quality.

Actually, I was thinking of this version which I think was the original released in a 4" King.

That's very nice indeed!

Chessbaazar will release Dubrovnik 3.0 set soon. In my opinion they are getting better and better. I really think this Zukertort reporo is quite good. I might purchase it for Xmas to honour the grandmaster from my city, Breslau / Wroclaw.

This might be new. From Staunton Castle.

Reminds me of a 1929 set from Official Staunton

Hi, I have a question. I have a 3.5" Jaques reproduction set with a 1.65" base king and 1.2" pawn base. A fine woodworker is making a solid wood board from Indian rosewood and maple and the square size is 53 mm / 2.08". I would like to add a mahogany frame that resembles the 19th century Jaques and BCC chess boards with a raised border. However, I don't have access to such a board so I don't have a clue what the measurements and ratios are. Is there someone who can tell me what height and width such a border should be for a given square size and how much the playing surface drops from the frame height? I would very much appreciate your help!

Impractical

Frank Camaratta is selling such a board

Have a look at antiquechessshop . com under boards and in the pieces section to see the various options. I think it ranges from very thin to 1/2 to 3/4 the size of a square.

Seems that the Camaratta design is getting some attention nowadays:

Impractical

I don't think of Steiner's design as a Jaques pattern.

Well, no one is forcing you to buy it.

Time to bump the Jaques thread!

Any thoughts on this please...

I'd buy such set in that condition if I desperately need replacement/missing pieces from my own set and those pieces matches mine. Like I need one white horsie because mine is missing for example. Other then that it's only interesting for people who can do a restoration themselves I guess?

EfimLG47

Significant damages on that one and still a very desirable item for any Jaques collector. The seller thinks it is 1870, which is clearly wrong IMO. Both, the design of the knights and the label point to 1850. The particular label design plus the handwritten number 561 can hardly be 1870, but are 1850 and the design of the knight fits this dating, so the box seems to originally belong to the set. Bids are currently at £1,260, but this won't be the end. The final bid will in my view be more towards 3-4k£. As for the damages, these are unfortunate, but can be fixed by a skilled restorer. The extra effort would be worthwhile for such a beautiful early set.

TheOneCalledMichael

Yeah I've been wondering about that restoration. If you have to let that done by a skilled restorer it would cost a lot so wouldn't it be better to save that 4k + restoration cost towards a pristine one?
