I see chessbazzar is running a design your own chess set competition. I should think that several of the players on this thread might be interested.

Eyechess

I went to the Chessbazaar website and could not find this competition.  Where is it?

These knights from Amristrar all have the Amristrar look to my eye, very well carved but as much like a signature of the makers as any makers stamp.

I ordered some carved knights heads fron Amristrar a couple of years ago they look very similar to the point of substitution into any one of these modern sets.

When I can find my camera I will post a pic of one of these and an actual boxwood Jaques ebonised knight (First 500 first year production) You will see the difference.

Alan......Incredulous....... I am sorry I just do not agree with you one bit. There is no such thing as " Amritsar Knights" I have been dealing with Amritsars TOP carvers such as my very good friend Bhupinder Singh and his very talented team for over 20 years. I also deal with the makers for HOS and Jaques London. It seems to me that whenever I post my Jaques reproduction sets you pop on this Amritsar Knights theory as if its the "standard" knight design from Amritsar?? well let me tell you, it is quite clearly not! if it was so easy as a simple carved design then your appointed carvers would have nailed it first time with your attempt of 1849!

I said it back then and got a lot of flack on here from those whom hold you in such high esteem, those same people you drew into buying your version which resembled NOTHING I have ever seen from Jaques in my lifetime!

No doubt I will suffer the consequences of you fame/fans... but I seem to be one of a minority who will actually say it as it is! Putting your name to that CB set and adding the name " Jaques" next to it enraged me into actually producing the best reproductions made to this day! ..and if I lose face on here for speaking my mind then so be it.

I think if you contact Vik he will send specific details and the forms to fill in.

Ok Alex,

This is easily solved, I have the knights ready to photograph I will post the pics shortly.

Carl, there is a saying that the proof is in the pudding.

With that the sets you have produced in the last number of months is proof of a very high quality.  The "pudding" that you, Carl, have "made" is very tasty indeed.

The members of this forum that buy and collect chess sets have all acclaimed the sets you have produced and backed up their praise by purchasing those sets.

Alan is also known as an expert in antique chess sets and their repair.

This is the first I have read of his theory about an Armistrar look to the knights.

Alan said he was going to post pictures with the comparisons.  I look forward to that.

thank you so much.....my point is simple....why didnt Alan with all his knowledge and Amritsar Knight theories put this to practice and create at least something that actually looks like a Jaques?

and what is he out to prove exactly? that our versions are simple and basic to any other knight? quite cleary this is not the case....oh sure he will prove that there are indeed some very fine carved knights from Amritsar that may well look simiilar to what we have however just like the proof is in the pudding, there is another saying...the cream always comes to the top!

by the way Alan has already posted the images of Amritsar knights in this thread.....

anyhow the fact as you say collectors on here have purchased and praised these designs means the absolute World to me.

This apparently is a hidden or secret competition...

maybe there is a secret handshake,...I hope.

Well Alex,

".the cream always comes to the top! "

I was in the building trade in London where you live (Although I worked mostly in Kensington and Belgravia) where the expression is " s h1t always floats to the surface".

Anyway as I think I said previously, I have achieved my aim which was to ensure that sets offered to players were the best they could be at a price anyone could afford.

The name is actually Carl and not Alex....

and I do not live in London, I have an associate/business chess shop in London, but I actually live in the middle of the shropshire countryside, a very remote area.

nice choice of words there Alan and one that shows a reflection of your old trade union days....keep up the good work!

I think Alan should be looking for his glasses more than his camera.

Alan, you have designed the CB 1849 set.  I do know this.

Have you designed any other sets for CB or any other company?

I have received their email on Saturday and the contest is open worldwide, so anyone can enter. It’s a great opportunity for all chess collectors and the prize is free chess set. I have posted my 14 favourite chess sets. Hope my innovative designs will get selected and my name is featured worldwide on the lisitng page of the set :). I believe that they have only e-mailed to their newsletter subscribers anyways here's the link http://www.chessbazaar.com/custom-design/

Good luck to everyone

Just so you can see the momentous leap forward in the jaques reproductions (knights) since the Dewey/Bazaar introduction.  No doubt even my renditions will be surpassed with perhaps House of Staunton or some other top quality retailer, lets hope so hey!

here we have from left to right;;

Original Jaques 1849 -  Official Staunton 1851, Official Staunton 1870, Alan Dewey /CB 1849 and Official Staunton 1849.

and here on the left side -demonstrating an original 1851 Jaques Knight (taken from Alan Deweys website)  to our very own Official Staunton Jaques Reproduction 1851...... very very close IMO

Fantastic Carl ! Absolute gorgeous player ! IOHO no one is gonna get any closer than that. Any chance of a set in genuine ebony in the future ? We be happy to be beta testers Laughing. If so we'd make bets that you wouldn't skimp on the quality of the genuine ebony wood used and also avoid cracking as well with properly placed weighting Wink. Your quality control and hands on diligence has obviously been at the top of the heap Cool.

Oh...kingside stamping please and with your famous white king stamped logo in red. Perfect !
