Reproduction and Real Jaques of London Chess Set

@jjrehp

I'd probably get that if the price is right.  The King at least is Jaques, and I believe the Queen and Rook are also legit.  The Bishop and Pawn are harder to verify, but they are also likely to be Jaques.

The Knight is from a different set, I would say it is probably not a Jaques Knight.  However, there are plenty of opportunities to find replacement Knight pieces these days.

If the price is less than about $500 and I had the cash I'd probably get it if all the pieces other the Knights are there.

He can hardly speak............................he's a little horse! :)

ROBB_CHESS

Might be a wise idea to see the black pieces as well as the whole set I would think :)

Am not sure whether Josh was having some fun with the thread, but it's plain to see the knight has no business in that stable.

Apart from the obvious faults with this set (Knight head, kings X) It is a good idea to ask to see all the felts as missing or different felts mean imposters in the camp. Invariably in my experience I might add.

I have been restoring Jaques and other sets for 25 years and that is a tell tale that most dealers do not fiddle about with.

Asking for pictures of all the pieces in groups of 4 or 8 is probably asking too much but it depends on the price. (IMHO)

I took my 4.4" beauty (from Vik) downtown to play yesterday and will post pics and a video soon.

Thanks Alan.! So you have the set in hand.? I am sure its A-1 in quality. Even though I want to see the pics & video I am holding out for the 3.5 inch King version.

Here it is.

Gorgeous.  If they're priced reasonably, CB should sell all they can make.  Why the wrinkled rollup board though?  They deserve at least a folding wooden board.

hi guys,

thanks for feedback

ROBB_CHESS

...nice video & was a fun game to watch, but some close up pics will probably be a better viewing of the actual set... I do happen to like that antique looking finish though more than a new whiteish raw finish...

Very nice, Alan. Just curious: are you happy with the knights? Are they changed? What bothered me a little about the previous set Chessbazaar offered was that the knights were too large in relation to the other pieces, IMO.

Very nice video of the pieces Alan.! I love watching Chess Hustlers in the park & some of them are near Master level at Blitz. Was that a standard 2 1/4 inch vinyl board or a 2 1/2 inch vinyl board??

chessspy1

Hi Guys,

I had to borrow the board as I just gave my plastic set and board to the postman who's daughter is starting to play chess. (along with copies of Bott and Morrison's two books the best children's chess primer ever IMHO).

I like the knights they are as close to the sample I sent, a genuine 1849 knight as I have seen in an Indian made set and they are the right size.

Yes the board is a 'standard' 2.25 comp board, I like the slightly crowded feel of the pieces I think I can take in the board at a glance which I cannot do with the larger boards.

They are well weighted with good hand feel.

I will take some studio shots tomorrow.

several things look wrong with this set:

The King's cross is clearly wrong. Also, the knight's head is from an Ayres set.

I am not sure about the king's cross - couldn't it be just the photo angle?

The knight is obviously wrong, and the rook/queen pair looks weird (queen not much taller and possibly thinner).

Additionally, Jacques or no Jacques, I wouldn't buy a set with that much cracks unless at bargain price, or willing to restore it yourself.

All this being said, AlanDewey's (#150) word carries a lot more weight than mine, as do that of most posters here.

Really nice to see Robert treat the pieces with some respect, and they look great in action.  I was in suspense to see you win, Alan, but hearing your 3 straight wins made up for it ;).

That short Queen especially makes the set unique enough for you to glance again and say "wait a moment, these are a little different from what I'm used to...".

Am I right to understand these are the first generation reproductions, and not what is set to come out next week?

chessspy1

Yes. But apart from a very few tweaks the production sets should be the same.
