Hi Guys...We took the CB design 1849 and made some size adjustments....

what does that mean, Carl? Are you offering this? If so, what are the details? (price, wood, size etc)

Hi Frank

It was purley to see how the set would look given a few size tweaks, we could not compete with Viks, pricing however.

FrankHelwig

Got it. The size tweaks you made are all good.

I notice that most of these repro sets are advertised as not being UV resistant. I assume this means that you can't have them on prolonged display because the pieces, especially the dark ones, will fade. What is the experience of previous purchasers/advice of manufacturers?

I must admit that sun can have extremely detrimental effects on wooden chess pieces. But this fact is only applicable on dyed chess pieces not for ebony, bud rose wood etc chess pieces. I have many chess sets in bud rose & ebony wood from chessbazaar & HOS and I play with them in my lawn with direct sunlight over them and till date I haven't experienced any hairline splits, crack or color change. But just to be on the safe side it is best to keep the wooden chess pieces away from direct sunlight. UV rays can only destroy a chess piece in a few weeks to months not in hours. So you can easily play your game in a direct sunlight and if you want to keep them on prolonged display, use UV window protection to keep the sun from directly shining on your wooden chess set.

Hi Amanda,

I should think that putting a set on display where the sun can shine on it directly would perhaps cause it to change colour on the side which gets most sun. So that is not a good idea.

Oxidation is the process which causes wood to darken over the years and cannot easily be prevented without spraying the wood with varnish or similar. The darkening of wood through time is generally regarded as desirable and enhances it's appearance.

Carl, looks like you've enlarged the pawns, which were a bit too diminutive, and shortened the knights, which were wee bit too tall.

I've always felt the pieces of the original 1849 Staunton set were somewhat mismatched, giving the impression that someone had 'mixed and matched' pieces from different size sets.

Here's a comparison of the original set, as seen on your website, and the 'tweaked' set that you've pictured above. To my eye, the tweaked set looks more balanced. Well done!

MY TAKE: If I was tweaking the original 1849 Staunton it would look something like this.

Just seen a Jaques 1849 with cooke knights on ebay now...here is a great close up of the knights...beautiful arent they?!  a superb original set....extensive damage unfortunatley.

it is pleasing to compare our 1851 knight to this stunning original, espeially the knights.

correct!! :)

The label being under the box and the reg sticker with the '5' the right way round indicates this is an early set.

Although the damage is extensive it can all be fixed and the pawn missing being ebony makes it easier to match
