The book does have a complete introduction to chess in the first chapter. After that, Yasser explains the four elements of the Seirawan Chess System (tm): force, time, space, and pawn structure. Those are a little more interesting, and will be useful to know in the later books. If you are already familiar with these concepts, my suggestion would be to buy the tactics and strategies book and to get a copy of Play Winning Chess from a library or reading it in a bookstore without buying it.
Seirawan's Play Winning Chess
Thanks, I have the chance to get it from a book swap site for a "point" so, it won't cost anything. I could use help with pawn structure. Of the things you mentioned, I think that would be most useful. I may as well pick it up. If it isn't so useful for me, my kids might someday become interested enough to read it.
Is this book very basic? I'm not interested in a Reinfeld styled book with pictures of the patterns of possible moves for the knight. I understand that some of the books in that series might be good, e.g. the one on tactics, the one on strategies, the one on openings, etc. Not interested in a book on how castling works, however. Is the book in the topic the introduction to those other books? Anyone have experience with the book? Thanks!
