Selenus chess set found today in a flea market in Switzerland

Nice find for 35 Swiss francs. There is many a hidden treasures in that land of chocolate / dairy / watches etc hidden away in vaults not for the likes of us

That is a so called "Nuremberg Spindle" set. It is closely related to the Selenus chess sets, but I would not regard it as a pure Selenus as it does not have the pronounced galleries ("crows nest") that are typical for Selenus sets.

Thank you very much, yes, I noted already that typical Selenus sets have some distinctive features. Unfortunately I trusted the terminology used by Christie’s. I will check Nuremberg Spindle in my books.

It really is in between and sometimes also called "Selenus spindle". If you google for "spindle chess set" you should find a lot of examples.

👍Yes, I found several very similar to my set.

Thanks, yes, you are right.

@brasileirosim, here is one I (luckily) got my hands on recently. It is an early Selenus style and I believe it to be from Geislingen, 18th century - extremely rare.

I found this set today in a shop in Switzerland. Unfortunately, several pieces are damaged, so I purchased them for replacement. Queen and King are nicely carved.

I just love this set, it was a great find for you! The white knights steed looks he could use a new shoe. The black pieces display a very nice time and battle worn faded body. Only time can create this. Thank you for posting the pictures.

@brasileirorosim, interesting set, in particular the pierced crowns of the kings and queens. Looks somehow in between this type of Selenus set and a Delhi set.

@Wits-end, thanks! The set has a few damages. Some of them I will have repaired. But the overall condition is really good for a set as old as that, so yes, I consider myself very lucky!
The set is complete and only with minor damages, which is quite unusual. And the price…well, I had it for 35 Swiss francs. Here a similar set sold by Christie’s
