Ok, we've all seen your set, we've all seen your 100's of posts about how good it is.

Are you now going to produce it or do want more admiration ?

Chesshole is right when he says it's nothing more than an ego trip.

Either produce it or bin the idea.

lovely, Gustav.  Perfect.  :)

actually, we're still working on it. There's a bunch of us who are working on it. Its okay if you don't want to help. Weird trolls. They check threads they're not interested in. Weird pleasures. lol.

it's easy to just call somebody that makes a point or criticism a troll isn't it?  Weird pleasures.  lol.

Hi LoveMagnet.  I would like to address the safety issue which apparently has not been mentioned in other posts regarding your chess set.   From safety stand point the bishop is like a knife due to the bishop's cap.  Perhaps you could put a small solid ball on top, which is also the way the bishop looks in the Small Regular chess font.  Likewise the queen could potentially bring some safety issue.  Think a kid grabbing a chess piece and inadvertilly bring it to its face.  The Knight's back could have the hair pointing down rather than outward.  Wish this help you before taking into production your artistic and cool looking chess set.  Cheers.

actually, except for professional tournaments, which use DGT sets now, amateur tournaments use cheap plastic pieces on the order of 5 bucks a set. Tournaments are def not the market for this set. Collectors of interesting chess sets including high end chess sets, gift givers, and unique creative chess players are the market for this set.  There's already interest for this set on this site, and if the set is produced on a make-to-order basis, there's no expense except for the r&d, which, frankly, I think LoveMagnet has licked! :)

adamstask

oh man, oh man

so I post about kickstarter as if I just discovered America ;->

and others post about shapeways, similarly.

I just noticed that LoveMagnet mentions both of them in his original post

:) well, we are keeners after all. Legilmans, 205thsq, Baddogno, Radio, we are keeners, that's for sure. :)

and to all, a good night!

We dont want people getting hurt, so put a small ball on top of the heads of the bishops.

Meh, it's not that dangerous, natural selection needs to take its course.

yah, makes sense. And as bresando reminded us, we're actually not doing this to get a chess set built, necessarily, and neither is LoveMagnet. But its a nice exercise for many of us. And maybe we're helping LoveMagnet get his own set for his own use, and possibly helping him have the pleasure of knowing that so many people 'shared the love' on his project.

We have no idea about his entrepreneurial background, his financial situation, etc etc., and frankly, we don't care at this point. Maybe if he decides to take it further, and continues to ask for help from us, we'll get there, but we're not there yet.

I doubt there's a huge market for chess sets, but, let's face it, Magnus Carlsen is doing the best thing for chess since Bobby Fischer did. And between Judit Polgar and Magnus chess is probably growing faster than its ever done before or since the age of Fischer. So, creating chess sets is not like creating maps of a flat earth, by any stretch. ;-> Granted, this is not going to a mass produced, mass marketed chess set; its too unique for that. But it is not so unique as to be attractive to only LoveMagnet; quite a few people on this lonely little thread have already expressed support for it. And yes, LoveMag should be careful before he refinances his house for this chess set.

you ostentatious plonker.  get a room with the OP why don't you?

Is it just me, or is anyone else following this thread just to see what chesshole posts next?

adamstask

haha, at first I was bugged by him. I'm not someone who posts a lot on these boards, (this one is the first time I've become a dedicaed contributer) and I wasn't ready for him. But now, Ipswich, I actually do find him funny and look forward to his jokes. Certainly not 'beat their face in'. I do, also, find him 'interesting' as a case study in human behaviour.

Seriously though, IMHO the set is quite a turkey.....and I mean no offense.....but product designers earn their money for a very good reason.  3d-printing your own set, cool beans....but the set 'as is' has a very peculiar aesthetic that would have a very narrow public. But as they say, there's no accounting for taste!

If I had to recommend anything, I'd say a refresher course in classical architecture wouldn't go amiss, the bases of chessmen are derived from the classical order -the tuscan column base, for instance- and a proper understanding of these forms will help inform your design immensely.

He's amusing, but not as much of a "deserves-their-face-beat-in" troll as a couple of the other regulars I've encountered on here are.

Are you referring to a poster in the "Centaur Chess" thread ?

(Apologies to the OP for being completely off-topic)

adamstask

ok, back to the work at hand. I showed this entire thread and the evolution of the set to my chess buddy last night, and she was very impressed with the set. I am looking forward to any modifications, thoughts, questions, LoveMag and the collaborators have for us today.

Delissen

Would it be possible for you to make a copy of the old drueke plastic chess sets, very many people still looking for them...

LoveMagnet

Sorry. I've been at the hospital to be examined and had needles and stuff stuck in me, and now I'm a bit tired. So no updates today, but I appreciate all the constructive criticism and help I'm getting. It's not only rubbing my apparently over sized ego the right way. It is also helping me make a much nicer set than I could make on my own.

Just to put one thing straight. It is not a given that this will be mass produced. I don't know what a tool for a plastic injection molding machine costs, other than that it is expensive. I could easily learn that the set would have to sell in unrealistic amounts to make it profitable. In that case the design goes on to shapeways.com. That at least I can do with zero risc, and anybody who wants a set can get it as kind of a DIY kit, where you have to fill the pieces up with some sort of epoxy or other filling material and add felt on the bottoms. Maybe do a bit of sanding and polishing and stuff. Anyway it WILL be available to the public in some form.

Maybe I could if I could get some good pictures or a real set to look at. The real question is whose copyrights I would be violating ;-)

adamstask

Delissen: I have read somewhere that chessusa has a very close copy of the plastic drueke set for sale, and many people have bought it and find it almost identical to the original except for a slightly different knight, a tiny difference. Also, Drueke sets go on sale on craigslist and kijiji very regularly. Someone in Toronto sold one last week for sixty bucks on craigslist, a 35h Drueke set. So keep checking those places and you're sure to get one.

LoveMag: great to hear you're feeling good about the input and that you feel you are making a better set than you could have made yourself. Awesome. Hope you feel better soon.
