To top it all off, you can bake your cookies on it.

From breast implants to chess boards. Have you no shame, no decency??

Some of my best friends are silicone-based lifeforms.

To add to this, I have had my silicone board wadded up in my drawstring bag of chess pieces for over a year and it still lays perfectly flat:

This is what it looks like with my wooden pieces.  Couldn't be happier.  The whole thing fits in a little drawstring bag and cost less than $30 for board and pieces.

edit: I see a little warping over around h4 in this picutre, but that went away with just a little tug of the corners.

Where are your wooden pieces from?  It's a nice looking set.

The chess clubs I play at meet in restaurants.  Food particles stick to the silcone boards I've seen.

My vinyl pad accumulates a little junk and I suspect mousepads do too, but the silicone ones seem to attack more particles.

Anyone else observe this ?

You can always wash it.

best chessboard ever

Yes..! its 20 times better than a rollup vinyl board. You can clean it easily in the sink with slightly warm water.

It does feel weird though, almost like you would imagine artificial skin to feel.  Piece sliders won't be happy either.  My favorite in the "roll up" category for ease of maintenance and good looks.  Not sure I'd agree to play on the typically wavy vinyl board anymore.  Boards that won't lie flat drive me a little wacko. Laughing

I bought one about three years ago and hardly ever use it. I just keep it in my bag in case there's no other acceptable board available.

Yes, it lies flat even after being folded (and that's a great thing). But the "feel" of it just isn't natural. It collects dust like there's no tomorrow, and the pieces stick to it.

It doesn't "play" as well as it "looks."

My chess pieces do not stick to it. Are you a piece slider as this will not work on a silicone board? Where do you live that it collects dust.? I have never had that problem in Missouri.

Avatar of fburton

Are there States without dust? This is news to me.

Avatar of 9kick9

The Southwest in the USA has a lot of dust. My Aunt lives in Oklahoma & complains about the dust often.

And of course there are the dust devils. I would hate to play with silicone pieces with one of those around - or indeed any sort of pieces (but especially silicone ones).
