A heavily weighted set just feels better somehow. I think most people prefer larger pieces for a similar reason. They're easier to pick up and of course more impressive looking. If the set is for playing that is; for studying a smaller set is more convenient if for no other reason than you get tired of the long reach necessary to move the pieces around. I actually have 2 sets that are over 4" for showoff purposes. One is 4.4" and made of bud rosewood and the other is 4.5" and made of ebony. Don't forget to factor in the cost of a nice board with your set. 2.5" or 2.75" square boards aren't cheap. I imagine most people choose a 3.75" or 4" with a 1.75" base so they can use the more standard 2.25" square boards. Try Ebay if you don't mind used. I've picked up some amazing deals over the years. Pity that HOS seems to have stopped their Ebay auctions; those were some sweet deals. Have fun shopping and playing.

While I actully own several chess sets none of them are what I call "classy, yet playable" sets. I recently moved my house around and now have an area where I can set up a nice table and chairs exclusively for a nice chess set to be permanently displayed. While I love using my standard plastic chess set I want something nicer. I seem drawn to larger chess pieces (3.75" to 4" king) and I also like them heavily weighted. My favorite plastic set is triple weighted.
So, after a long winded start, my question is this:
What do you prefer in your chess sets? Sized larger or smaller? Heavier or lighter? Does it make a difference to you at all?
Just curious.
