Vintage Soviet Russian Chess Set WIDE BASE pieces!!

Nothing pleases me more than collecting chess sets with WIDE BASE pieces. I will post a future forum  on the topic of sets with WIDE BASE pieces. But for now, I would like to share a recent acquistion, a WIDE BASE circa 1950s Soviet Russian set. Kings measure 3 7/8" in height with a 1 5/8" diameter base. Pawns are 2 1/8" in height. Pieces not weighted, but typical for many vintage Soviet sets. I love all the pieces, but the  WIDE BASE Pawns are especially pleasing. Enjoy the pics.

I'd be scared to play with those even when new. Depending on who owned them too much force and you could end up in the gulag Surprised.

Thanks for the warning Ron, but I'll take my chances!

Thanks Mike, Glad you like it!

Very nice,  Mike. The set certainly has gravitas. Like the Dubrovnik, the wide bases give it a low center of gravity so they'll remain stable if they're unweighted.

Thanks Lou, you make a good point for WIDE BASE sets!

Excellent taste in sets, Mike! I posted a photo review of an identical set a few months ago. Ron, the pieces held up well in blitz. Like Mike, I have no worries.

Mine seems to be from 1975, but who really knows if the boxes these come in are the originals?

Our sets seem to be what Yuri Averbakh is playing with here, though note that the bases on his rooks are even wider than ours!

Some individual portraits of the pieces...

My pieces are slightly weighted. Some of the weights have loosened over the years and can be heard rattling around.

Chuck, I looked at my set again and my pieces are weighted too, but nothing to write home about.  Thanks for your contribution to my forum

The sets look simlliar, but I do like the piecces better in the Averback  set, especially the Bishops and Rooks
