I really like the sleek lines of this large Soviet set from the seventies, especially of the kings, queens, bishops, and pawns...

The knights are well carved and proportioned. Sturdy and aggressive.

Chuck thanks for the wonderful pics, outstanding Soviet set in every way. Each amazing piece rates a 10+  on the Richter scale. Congrats on a very fine acquisition!

Rooks looks like from other set. All pieces have same base except rooks.

Otherwise a nice set. Though I prefer clock more :)

Absolutely beautiful, cgrau.

That set looks very close to the one below:

Congratulations and keep 'em coming!

Thanks, Up. Yes, it's very close to that, as is my smaller 1941 set.

Pretty sure the rooks are original to this set. The bases are not materially different. The stain is the same. The wear is the same. They are weighted similarly. They all have the same blue cloth bottoms. And they are proportionate to the other pieces.  I just had the two clocks cleaned. It runs very well.

Can you compare your real rook base with one in photo by UpcountryRain

To me they have different proportions.

They're different. From which I don't conclude my rooks are replacements. I conclude that Averbakh's set had a different rook design than mine does.
