If you had to live with a board whose squares are slightly too big or slightly too small which way would you go?

Slightly too small.

I like a slightly cramped board.

(Thankfully, I don't have to live with just one board.)

I would prefer slightly too small as well.  Many of the Soviet sets on their folding boards are close, and that is attractive to me, but you can tell right away when you see one that is "cramped".  That's to my eye anyway.  I put my 1849 club sized reproduction on a 2 1/4" board and it feels very good to me, but I know there are some who would prefer to see it on 2 3/8 or 2 1/2...

Yes, @Horace, I guess I use the word "cramped' when I really just mean "close".

Some of us have more chessboards than we can use at the same time... well, unless we give a simul! SEriously, though, I like to give the pieces room to breathe, so it depends on the set. I couldn't have just one board. At last count, 23 boards with squares between 2" and 2-3/4" -- not counting the Russian board/boxes -- there are at least a dozen of those.

Feeling like I’ve come to late to the party when it comes to getting a board. The ones I find are either too elaborate or the squares are too big. So the search continues.
