Excellent response!

So glad I'm good at rationalizing how I don't want to get anymore sets.

Might be time to take up checkers!

This looks like one example where the chess retailer + manufacturer combination worked better. Retailers take care of customer service while manufacturers focus on set production. Carl And Mandeep have worked together in the past and they did magic with their sets. I haven’t bought anything from OS or SC but based on what I have read online, Mandeep Saggu is currently the No 1 Chess Artisan in Amritsar. Unlike CB or TCE, the owner of SC is himself a Chess set carver.

What did you get? Come on, Dave, spill the beans.

Hahaha, well, I managed to catch the wife in an excellent mood (I had very little to do with that) and had managed to build up some "goodwill credits" over the holidays, so I spent both of 'em on the Hastings Series Luxury set in Tasmanian Blackwood.  From the slight taper of the rook's battlements to the not-too-small bishop miter cut and un-chopped "man-bun" at the top to the amazing knight (IMHO) this set is awesome.  And the Tasmanian blackwood is  more stunning than I expected.  Score!

I seem to remember also promising that this was my last/only set for the year...is it still 2021? tongue.png

@GrandPatzerDave Wow. A very handsome set and thanks for pointing out a few details. The 'un-chopped man bun' description would not have occurred to me. LOL

Haha, thanks!  I just realized that I typed "not-too-small bishop miter cut" when I actually meant "not-too-large".  I plead not enough coffee...  ;-)

Works either way. The Danum set I have my eye on has a 'maybe too small' mitre cut.

Surely someone on this vast chess resource has become more than just a casual customer to Mandeep over the years? A sight administrator possibly? Maybe a personal appeal would draw him out. Does no one know how to write in Punjabi? Even if they are only 'proportionately' represented (though they are more than this) on this sight, Punjabi people would still be as legion in chess as they are by population. That might catch Mandeep's eye, and draw it to this thread and the growing dissent that his disregard of his past, current and future clients is fomenting for his business.  I can't redirect my business, because I can't find anything I want anywhere else (having seen Mandeep's sides), but I'm almost resolved to doing without; not to make a point, that would be both flaccid and self-depriving, but rather because I've come to doubt that his business model will support my want of entire sides free of defect or pronounced color variation. I need my men conspicuously arrayed in the identical rather than just similar livery; the better to stand as a formal army, rather than a casual and scruffy (though capable) militia.

I  beat my computer (level 3) last night. Small victories.

We now return to your regularly scheduled program. Thank you.

I was committed to the Attica: it hits all the right notes, neither too modest nor too flashy, but I too am growing increasingly fond of the florid knight of the Danum set. I was not sure at first of the cup style head of the king (rather than a ball) either, but in light of what is becoming and increasingly unavailable vendor, I do like the idea of a 2nd finial; in case one of my cats knocks one off the board and snaps it off, or decides to chew on it, leaving it on the floor for one of my dogs to further desecrate. Does anyone know the origins of this design? I really like the Aristocrat too, but have 'not yet' accepted the bridled knight. But at the rate things are going , it seems that I will have plenty of time to make space in my diet for new appetites.

The Danum set seems to very similar to the Constantine design on the Official Staunton website.

We have seen people that sell Chess sets for a living show very poor form recently.  Mandeep has done very well for people in the past.  Raphael of The Chess House has also been great, but we see some complaints on here that do not seem right about him and his company.  The House of Staunton has also been good, but we have seen some issues with their service as well.

The House of Staunton is a bigger company than the other two.  And we have seen problems from them in the past.  In my experience I have seen only two occasions where they could not fix the problem.  If anyone is still having a problem with them I would suggest a call, asking for Kevin to get it fixed.

Likewise, a phone call to the Chess House asking for Raphael, the owner is also my suggestion for them.  He only has two employees, to my knowledge, but some  of the problems I read about here warrants speaking with the owner.

Mandeep also has been good.  I am at a loss on this one as what to do other than what has been tried already.  I guess going directly to him would also be the thing.  This worked for Lou.

I would shop elsewhere but no one but Staunton Castle sells what I want. I have patience - I can wait.

I settled for whiskey, for the wheels, they be a-comin' off.

Danum: That's a beautiful set.  I'd have to spend a bunch on a board that's worthy!

Very nice!  I've been thinking about JLP's folding board but all things JLP seem to be backordered these days.  Ah, well...as you mentioned, patience.
